Oktoberfest is celebrated in every hotel in Hong Kong- and has been, probably going back to the days when Methuselah was a kid. Where Oktoberfest receives a unique twist is at Happy Valley Racecourse when the traditional celebrations become part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Happy Wednesday nights- four consecutive nights to be exact, starting from tomorrow night and continuing for the next three Wednesdays.
Officiating at the opening ceremony tomorrow will be the head of the German Consulate Nikolaus Graf Lambsdorff and Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, CEO of the HKJC. And from here on, the fun kicks in with the band Notenhobler from Germany flown in especially to blast out their Oompahpah sounds while tourists mingle with Happy Wednesday regulars. And adding to the melting pot being- what else?- all things German- beers- fifteen different types of beer in all- sausages, sauerkraut, fräuleins, potato salads, more beer, more fräuleins, plus competitions, and to get pulses racing, all the races taking place right in front of the Beer Garden. Prost!
