The new way of looking at horse racing

ALL THAT JAZZ

(Source: IMP Awards)

If one can truly “understand” Jazz, something’s just not right. If, musically, the next note or the next solo or the next break can be predicted, that’s not Jazz. That’s just formulaic shuck and jive like hotel lounge singers trying to sing “soul”. It’s fake musical goods.

At least to me, listening to Jazz, especially in a ‘live’ environment, must have a silent Wow Factor.

As for those playing, it’s all about taking chances from that Bitches Brew and seeing what that gumbo might taste like.

It’s about expecting and experiencing the unpredictable, something Miles did so well with great talent and equal parts arrogance.

I was reminded of this watching my mate, saxophonist Blaine Whittaker sit in for a while with a makeshift jazz group on the weekend at Peel Fresco that included the ubiquitous Ted Lo on piano who simply loves to play for the love of music, Steve on double bass and two younger guys, the drummer being someone named Alvin Leung on drums, below, and a guitarist whose name I really forgot. Treetrunk? Thaddeus? Tyrone?

They did their best, but still not close to the extremely talented young local jazz quartet maRK.

Nothing against the rest of the guys, but when Blaine got up there and blew, it came from somewhere else- heart, head and somewhere out of his head and into the minds of those who could absorb it all without imploding.

It wasn’t formulaic playing and not meant to be understood. It was like Barbara Billingsley speaking jive in “Airplane!”

My friend had entered Blaine’s World and was inviting anyone who dared to come in.

This was Jazz.
