In an often-too often-very uptight city where pretty regular people become “officials” and believe that this means having to act and behave in an “officious” manner that actually alienates them from the public whom they’re meant to represent in one way or another, thank gawd for Allan Zeman.
The so-called “Father of Lan Kwai Fong” is never ever shy or precious to get out there to bring some FUN when even tackling serious subjects. He’s not above playing the court jester to bring whatever he’s supporting to a grass roots level and the mainstream media.
Yesterday, this quietly spoken Canadian who made Hong Kong his home over three decades ago, and turned a rubbish dump into the trendiest area of Hong Kong- Lan Kwai Fong- and one of the real good guys of Hong Kong, donned a wig and appeared in drag playing rudimentary piano at a wet market in Yau Ma Tei.
It was for a wonderful initiative: Part of a project by British artist Luke Jerram to bring the joys of music to streets around the world. As Allan Zeman put it, “I wanted to help bring happiness to Hong Kong. Music brings people together, so I learned this piece to do that.”
Imagine for a second if those duelling banjos of the Tien brothers-James and Michael- had the chutzpah to do that. But they won’t as they’re busy being “officious”.
All those whingeing old Pro-Democrats like that tedious battle axe Emily Lau, even some of our student leaders, and certainly, our esteemed leader CY Leung and his cronies with brooms up their backsides, need to know when to fucking lighten up, and as Monty Python sang, Look on the bright side of life.
That’s exactly what Allan Zeman is doing, and two thumbs up for that.
In a city where these days reading the newspapers is cause for manic depression, let’s get with Allan Zeman’s programme, remove those brooms from our arses and live a little.
