I remember talking to my mates in the 90s, as a young geeky indie music fan.
All we wanted to do was to show how impeccable our taste was, so came the inevitable and endless discussions of the Velvet Underground, the Smiths, Joy Division, Television etc. – all serious music, for boys.
But while “normal” kids were fantasising about Lousie Redknapp (nee Nurding), or falling for All Saints, us randy indie kids had our fair number of sex symbols of our own:
Nina Persson – a sweet Swedish blonde singing Black Sabbath, lounge singer-style, what’s there not to like?

Sonya Madan – we ignorantly thought she was the sexiest Asian ever lived; but we rightly thought her band Echobelly was merely average.
Insomniac by Echobelly
Beth Orton – lazy popular journalists called her the ‘comedown queen’, listen to “Central Reservation” and decide for yourself. And she is really tall.

Sarah Cracknell – how Northern boys thought glamourousLondonwas all about.
Only Love can Break your Heart cover by Saint Etienne
Louise Wener – had a song called “Swallow” that she sang in a skinny t-shirt, braless.
Swallow by Sleeper
Tanya Donelly – was in a band called Belly that should’ve been bigger than Jesus.
Gepetto by Belly
Charlotte Hatherley – restored the credibility of the Gibson SG from Angus Young.
Burn Baby Burn by Ash
Juliana Hatfield – the cool girlfriend of your best friend that you not-so-secretly fancied.
$1,000 Dollar Wedding cover by Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield
Sophie Ellis-Baxtor – we even quite fancied her mum Janet Ellis, a presenter on Blue Peter!
