One can take the man out of the jockey, but one can never take the jockey out of the man. Or trainer.
Or something like that.
Hong Kong’s favourite horse racing son, trainer Tony Cruz, has always gone all out to be amongst the winners on every Hong Kong International Race Day.
We can give you his “stats” but that’s boring.
Just believe us.
No jockey can bullshit him and he knows a good ride from a bad one.
Plus his friendships with the world’s greatest jockeys have lasted decades.
We know Tony pretty well and reckon one major reason for this is that part of him wishes he was still riding.
On Wednesday, he gave the great Frankie Dettori instructions on how to ride one of his horses- Regency Winner- and it won.
Frankie and Tony- like Frankie and Johnny- go a long ways back.
It’s a mutual admiration society.
On Sunday, Tony Cruz saddles up nine runners and we know that he has enormous confidence in California Memory taking out one of the International Cup races and has given his protégé Matthew Chadwick a huge opportunity to make a name for himself with the elite of the racing world watching.
Chadwick will not let his mentor down and we reckon the Cruz galloper will finish ahead of Ambitious Dragon- wherever they finish.
But with eight other runners, one thing is for certain: Every one of these Cruz runners will be cherry ripe for their races.
Having ridden as a jockey in France, the UK and other parts of Europe for everyone from Her Majesty The Queen to the Aga Khan, Cruz Control will be ready to soar to new heights- just like it has done over the years and at every Hong Kong International Race Meeting.
Wait and see.
