IMAGINE DERREN BROWN, MIND READER AT THE HKIR WEEK!
Over the years, many have tried different “systems” to find winners and over the years, we have seen many computer syndicates crash and burn, and ponzie schemes been unveiled before too many invested in these.
Some of us also know only too-well about the barking mad punter who flew in a lip reader to find out what was being said in the paddock and behind the barriers.
Alas, the lip reader didn’t speak Chinese and the plan went tits up.
But what about a mind reader like the quite spooky Derren Brown?
Watch what happens when he hit the track- and oh, to have him perform at Adrenaline or the Beer Garden on the night of the Longines International Jockeys Challenge or have a film crew follow him around Shatin on International Day.
This is what I mean about a sustaining marketing campaign and ensuring that the last memory of a big race day like this is not another fireworks display.
What for when it could never compare with Sheik Mo’s over-the-top “tribute” to Armageddon and The Day The Earth Stood Still at Meydan last year which spooked horses, jockeys, race-goers and neighboring countries.
Taking a chance and doing something new with someone like Derren Brown? Zero.
THE FAST TRACKER OF HAPPY WEDNESDAY AT HAPPY VALLEY.
While many are still shaking their heads over what happened during starters orders to Hey Cheers in race 5 at Shatin on Sunday plus the latest bit of over-hyped and intriguingly-timed bit of nonsense from racing’s Axis Of Evil in Sydney, tonight sees Brett Prebble make his first appearance of the Hong Kong racing season.
For the high-profile jock who won the Melbourne Cup last year, it was a pretty ho-hum three months in Australia where nothing went according to script and ended with the flop of Lucky Nine.
Quite rightly, connections of the brave galloper are absolutely shattered with the run over the 1200 metre straight at Flemington as favorite in the VRC Sprint Classic as it COULD jeopardize the chances of it taking its place in the HK Sprint.

Then again, has Lucky Nine ever performed well in Hong Kong over the 1000 metre straight?
No, so coming in sixth, was not really a surprise to quite a number of people- though many more, we hear, lost a small fortune betting on the horse as it was “the surest thing” of the day.
A “sure thing” at $3.70? Hmmm. That was a huge tip in itself and a WAKE UP CALL from bookmakers.
Tonight, Prebble joins the crowded riding ranks of Hong Kong and where he has only two rides- Bundle Of Joy for long-time supporter David Hall and Flying Keeper for good mate Casper Fownes.
It’s a long way from those past seasons where the jockey would have a full book of rides.
Things change, and as in poker, good runs come to an end and the HKJC has dealt itself a strong hand where it’s not beholden to anyone and won’t be held to ransom.
No one is indispensable and the bike has been parked outside for quite a while now time will tell who stays and who goes.
As what has become de rigeur these days, Joao Moreira has another good book of rides- though, good gawd, not a full book- along with Zac Purton.
It might make sense to take a sizable 4×1 and 5×1 win roll up using the best rides of these two jockeys along with a 3×1 quinella place roll up on races where they both have strong chances.
With one ride tonight- on the very interesting Yat Ding Win for trainer Ricky Yiu in race 2- and a smattering of rides every race day, one has to wonder how much longer Italian jockey Nico Pinna will hang about like a bowl of soggy spaghetti despite riding a winner for Sean Woods on Sunday and killing off many Six Ups in the process.
The day Pinna and Woods combined for a winner and trainers David Ferraris and Paul O’Sullivan racked up doubles, well the odds of all that happening on the one day was just too spooky for words.
Hell, Jacky Tong gets more rides than Pinna er, though Yin Tong might soon see these being curtailed for a while as a bad case of Love might come knocking on his door.
Actually, there those days when Ying Tong gets more rides than Colm Donaghue and even Neil Callan and even one-time glamor boy Umberto Rispoli.
If O’Donoghue, we would have opened an Irish S&M pub in Soho during the three months here, named it Knick, Snacks and Paddy Whacks and made cameo appearances at the track.
Tonight, he, too, has one ride- in the last. Poor bugger might as well go walkies and chat up some birds at the Beer Garden where fashionistas will be “smeyezing” and sashaying down catwalks.
On that note, let’s all sing The Ying Tong Song by the Goons- and gawd knows, there are many in the racing caper- goons, that is, and move on to a few suggestions as there is a Six Up Boner to win.
CAUTION: There had been a steady drizzle most of yesterday, the weather today looks very dodgy, and one needs to watch the first few races to see if there is any track bias. And there always is at Happy Valley. Any rain around doubles the headache.
R1 SUPER BROTHER/LUCKY RED/TAI PO FORTUNE/CHINA GOOD (A watching brief)
R2 SIGHT LOVER/MR AWARD/YAT DING WIN/GOLDEN SCALPEL (Both Sight Lover and Mr Award are drawn out wide- pity as the latter looks to have been set for this. Yat Ding Win had a great start to its career here, but has been plagued with internal problems. Interesting that trainer Ricky Yiu saddles up Nico Pinna on this galloper.)
R3 CASA JUNIOR/SUPER BRAND/SUPER TEAM/BILLION GAINS (I just have to give Hollywood Kiss the Big Kiss Off. It will be under the odds again and seems only a bit player in a Tarantino movie)
R4 THE UNTOUCHABLE LAD/MAJESTIC ANTHEM/ OYSTER (Young Talent might run into a place, but I can’t see it half-winning again. Mosse will suit Majestic Anthem and Oyster is a good roughie. A succulent one.
R5 TURF MAGIC/BUNDLE OF JOY/PROLIFIC CHAMPION Jazzy Feeling has moved like a crab during track work and though I am tiring of Bundle Of Joy, it goes well for Prebble. The race could throw up a wobbly.
R6 BANKSTERS BONUS/LUCKY FOREVER/CLASSIC JEWELLERY/GLORIOUS RYDER (Marwing has been helping out rookie trainer Benno TP Yung quite a bit- and Benno seems to need all the help he can. They combine with Bankster’s Bonus and which could surprise.)
R7 WINDICATOR STAR/CALIFORNIA BOUNTY/LONDON CHINA TOWN (One of these should win)
R8 TRUMP/YEE CHONG STAR/ FLYING ELITE/HECO RIDER (A typically tough race to end the night, but Heco Rider is nearing a win though perhaps better at Shatin. Still I must bung it in to my Six Ups along with Yee Chong Star)

SECOND BEST Race 8, No. 8 Yee Cheong Star Honest showing when rallying late behind Sichuan Charm. Sure to be in the finish.
LONGSHOT Race 6, No. 11 Todos Con Suerte Faded after being pressured by Red Dancer last start. Well weighted and a win would not surprise.
