With the phenomenon that is the Brazilian Magic Man and Champion Hong Kong jockey Joao Moreira sitting out Wednesday night’s racing with a suspension, it definitely opens up things a lot more for the rest of the jockeys. Moreira has completely dominated this racing season by breaking his own incredible records, this despite the world class riding talents of Australian Zac Attack, below with the Magic Man, and the find of the year in female apprentice Kei Chiong.
Zac, who rode a brilliant treble at Shatin on Sunday, and a double at Queensland on Saturday including a Group 1 win, and Kei look the jockeys to follow on Happy Wednesday, especially as the latter is favourite to be awarded the inaugural Tony Cruz Award for the most successful local rider this season, an award named after Hong Kong’s favourite racing son, and a one-time world class rider who’s these days one of the city’s best and most successful trainers.
Follow Zac and Kei, but keep an eye on the rides of Keith Yeung, Chad Schofield, below, and Derek Leung. Keith is Kei’s main challenger for the coveted Tony Cruz Award- a great and overdue initiative by the HKJC- whereas Chad and Derek might not make the headlines, but are consistently amongst the winners.
Whoever wins, without the giant shadow of Joao Moreira hanging over the Happy Valley track, there will be plenty of value. A tip: Look at what the professional tipsters have selected- and then forget about them! Go with what you like based on whatever YOU like- a name, a lucky number, a favourite jockey or trainer etc. Going your own way has proven to be a successful and profitable formula for many, especially newbies to the racing world. Experts can oh-so-often be proven wrong in horse racing where one can always expect the unexpected. And if it rains, not even the horses know what’s going on. They’ll just be happy singing- and dancing in the rain.
