The new way of looking at horse racing

FINDING HAPPY WEDNESDAY: A CONTEMPORARY FAIRY TALE

And so it came to pass that the Dudley- Dud to his detractors- and his friends comprising dudes and dudettes, tired of trolling through the same old bars in Soho, bored with watching the world and good times pass them by in Wyndham Street, saddened at how LKF had fallen a victim of the past and having vowed to never ever set foot across the great waters and a place called Kowloon, were feeling lost and confused as to where to go to next.

It was all getting so predictable- and so boring- and meeting the same old people in the same old places and going home alone and unfulfilled.

“Is there nothing in Hong Kong that has the coolness and vibeology, we’re looking for?” they wondered out aloud. “A place with people we haven’t met before and a Facebook but where REAL people mingle and intermingle and inter-act and really talk? Online is fine, but, sometimes, at least once a week, we’d lke to get our feet off the ground, our heads from the clouds and our asses in gear.”

At that very moment, we saw something very colourful heading towards us. It was a rainbow-coloured double decker bus and called a “Magic Bus.”

Dudley and his dudes and dudettes were drawn into it like, well, like magic. After all, this was the Magic Bus. “Where are we going?” they asked as music played on the bus and with everyone trying to see who was driving it and who was hidden from view while seated inside a specially sealed metal capsule.

They knocked and asked, “Excuse me, but where are we going? Are you some kinda mobile DJ? Who ARE you?” The voice laughed out loud and said, “Mobile DJ? Are you guys from the Eighties? I am taking you to the greatest gig in town- a Happy Wednesday- and Happy Wednesday is up and running and happening right now! No time to waste! We need to get there fast! By the way, do you know who YOU are and how to really have FUN?” And fun was and is what Happy Wednesday is about.

Dudley and his Dudes and Dudettes looked at each other with WTF faces- and THAT doesn’t stand for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. “But will we find Happiness there?” they asked nervously and excitedy. “Dudes, it’s ALL about Happiness. Why else would it be called Happy Wednesday and held at Happy Valley?

Suddenly the Magic Bus took off. “Dude, who’s driving this bus? ET?” asked someone. “Be quiet and look down!” said the bus driver. They felt like a Nelly Futardo- the one about feeling like a bird.

As they looked down, they saw lights, they heard music. They saw thousands of people and saw horses running! It was a magical place!” “Is this Oz?” asked someone else?” “THIS, ” proudly explained the Magic Bus driver is Happy Valley Racecourse and where every Wednesday there is a Happy Wednesday- something to kick-start the rest of the week and give you a mid-week lift outta life!”

“Yeah, I can already feel being lifted- and it’s nothing to do with me being way up here!” said Dudley as the Magic Bus zoomed closer to what was going on below until it reached terra firma, dropped the friends off and, magically, took off again. “Got work to do guys,” waved the driver. “I have more people to bring! See you soon and don’t worry, be happy!”

As Dudley and his friends walked around, they couldn’t help smiling. Yes, this was Happy Valley and this was a Happy Wednesday and with Shiny Happy People. The happiness was contagious. It was what R.E.M. sang about- Shiny Happy People. They met new people, they listened to ‘live’ music, they found thmselves at new club, new restaurants and a very magical and happy place called The Beer Garden. And not ‘cos everyone there were pissed as newts. Sometimes, just being around the right people is enough. There were people being filmed, Dudley was interviewed, they watched the races, they waved at the jockeys, they followed those who waved back- and, yes, they gave a smile and got thousands back.

They discovered all the different food to be had- McDonald’s, KFC, kebabs, corn-on-the-cob and so much more. They each wandered off in their own directions. There was so much to see and get to know.

And guess what? Dudley met a girl named Happy and the rest, as they say, is a fairy book ending which will continue. One thing more: Dudley was never called Dud again. It was Dudley Dude-Right. And he was. Happy Wednesday had changed his and friends. They were feeling happy and very alive for the first time in a long time.
