FINDING HAPPY WEDNESDAYLAND

2010.11.24

A contemporary fairy tale by Fast Track with a nod to Lewis Carroll, Roald Dahl, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, the Beatles and the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

They were called But People not only because they lived at he end of Nowhere Land called Butland but because they would always use the word, “but” when speaking. For example, if you and I were to look up and say what a great day it was, they would answer that, But, we’re sure it will rain later. Or how, if everyone looked happy, they would say, “But it won’t last.” There was always a great big But to everything. They were sad f***ers and But People are amongst us every day.

Their glasses were not only half-empty, so were their lives. Their lives were full of Buts- and no Ifs and Buts about that. They were Lennon’s Nowhere Man, but actually Nowhere People making all their Nowhere Plans for Nobody and living a life of Big Buts and thinking that there was no happiness on the horizon. Then again, being But People, they only bounced around Butland on their, well, butts and which meant, they never saw The Big Picture. Only what their eyes could see- and which wasn’t much. There was a whole world they were missing out on.

Then, one Wednesday, something strange happened. Though no one played any music in Butland as very But Person thought it was a waste of time and how, “But people will one day run out of melodies and there will be no more music”, they heard some of the most unusual music they had ever heard. Not only that, but they started tapping their feet to the beat of the music and heard the sounds of people laughing and having a good time.

“But what they have to be so happy about?” they asked each other as, without even realizing is, they even started to hum along to what they were hearing. They had never heard this music. Or had they? But who was making this strange happy music and from where was it coming?

Butland was no “Alice In Wonderland” and no one was going to chase a rabbit down a hole and end up meeting The Mad Hatter and The Cheshire Cat.

Still, like Alice, they were curiouser and curiouser and went off in all directions to find out where this music and also sounds of happy people was coming from. But to really find out where all this Happiness was coming from, the But People needed to get off their Buts- and their butts.

Somehow, this happy music on this particular Wednesday which was such a Happy Wednesday made all the But People stretch their arms and legs.and when they did, they were standing up for the first time.

As they did, they could see things they had never seen before and which is when they saw something else that was Happy- a place called Happy Valley and it was a racecourse.

The But People moved closer to see what was happening in this strange place much like Alice did when she fell down the rabbit hole and discovered Wonderland.

Yes, it was that trippy. It was Yellow Submarine mixed with Sgt Pepper and Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with the Mad Matter revealed as being Willie.

As they slowly made their way to where all this Happiness was happening, they saw people dancing. They saw musicians playing. There were, what they described as “food courts” as they had never been to any restaurants. They saw, what to them were strange animals running fast with riders atop and with people cheering them on. They had also never seen horses before nor a horse race.

They walked into welcoming houses with names like “The Gallery” and “Adrenaline” and saw people talking to each other- laughing and busy being happy. And the more they saw these people came together and analyzed, scrutinized and Adrenalized everything being offered, the happier the But People became.

They, too, started to smile. They played with all the games with which these people were playing. They watched those powerful and beautiful animals running past them.and they joined everyone in cheering them on.

They along to the music being played along and, for the first time, they danced. After all, they were no longer watching the world go by sitting on their butts. Plus, there was one hobbit there to show them how to enjoy themselves though no one knew what he was talking about.

They were no longer But People. They were Happy People. Shiny Happy Wednesday People. The big Buts where replaced by What Ifs and Why Nots?

Everything was possible and nothing is impossible.

Life was good and with everyone coming together to create Why Not Land- and all Thanks to Happy Wednesdayland.
