If it were a Hollywood movie, it would probably be Oceans 12 or any other blockbuster featuring an A-list cast. Wednesday nights, International Jockey Challenge is horse racing’s equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster.
Sponsored by LONGINES, this Challenge stars some of the best riders from around the world- Gary Stevens and Mike Smith from the US, the Butch and Sundance of racing along with the brilliant Belgian Christophe Soumillon, French whiz kid Maxime Guyon, new Japanese riding sensation Suguru Hamanaka, Italy’s Mirco Demuro, and from Hong Kong, Douglas Whyte, Keith Yeung and Zac Purton.
All these great jockeys will compete in four designated races on horses balloted to each and with a points system deciding the winner.
Of course, there is a home team advantage as the Hong Kong riders compete on the unique Happy Valley track on a weekly basis.
Having said this, these are the best jockeys in the world to whom riding on different tracks is part of the job and where adaptability is key.
Win, lose or draw, it’s got all the ingredients for one incredibly exciting night of racing which will bring the Beer Garden, Gallery and Adrenaline alive and, we’re sure, will continue after the last race has been run.
