The new way of looking at horse racing

GOOD JOSS ON A HAPPY WEDNESDAY

GOOD JOSS ON A HAPPY WEDNESDAY 1

Looking back at Saturday’s Siesta Of Racing at Sha Tin, I don’t think I missed much other than Joao Moreira turning on the magic and riding another handful of winners and Karis Teetan keeping his strike rate going with another winner for David Ferraris.

The racing might have been on the ordinaire side of things, but there were a couple of rides by apprentice Dylan Mo to wake people up, including one particular WTF Moment.

Other than that, most of the favourites saluted and many probably went home singing, “If I Were A Rich Man”.

As for tonight, at least on paper, it looks like being another Truffaut day for night when it comes to favourites where if CONVINCIBLE (2) wins the last, the regular Six Up will probably pay less than $400. So, is there a need to go hunting for value?

Personally, I rarely follow Joao Moreira at Happy Valley as he’s just seems to be chilling with Dylan at the city track and digging the Samba sounds of Carnivale at the Beer Garden. Tonight, however, he has a couple of real value chances which are worth a look.

I also never bet on the first two races unless having had more than 18 tequila shots, and with my stats telling me that the favourites never win Race 3- the first leg of the Six Up whereas any distance races are fraught with danger. All it takes is for one rider to decide to take off and play Catch Me If You Can, leaving the others in his wake me up before you go go. Wham! Let’s not forget The Poon Train’s winning move on Inventor last week. Wham!

On the subject of The Poon Train, he’s been derailed and serving out a suspension, which means one less jockey to worry about.

If looking for value, I would look at some of Derek Leung’s rides as this kid can certainly ride and is often vastly ignored in the betting. On Saturday, it was good to see Tommy Berry get his Green Card on a galloper that finally delivered, but Derek Leung came agonisingly close to taking out that race on Imperial Gallantry. It was a winning ride that had to settle for second.
