HAVE THE CORPORATE BOXES CRIPPLED THE FUN OF THE HK RUGBY SEVENS

THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

Most talk about Hong Kong’s famous Rugby Sevens centered around something that was missing: The fun.

Sure, the wretched weather didn’t help, but neither did all those corporate boxes- reserved months earlier and either filled with those who seemed bored to even be there while others never even showed up.

Despite all the “happy snaps in, largely, the English newspapers, this “corporate takeover” proved how off-kilter this year’s event was- more of a stuffy and reserved affair and nothing like Sevens of the past where everybody let their hair down, wolfed down a few dozen pork pies, guzzled down beer, wore the most weird costumes one could find and let it all hang out.

Say what you might, apart from moments on Saturday, this never happened- certainly not like it has in other years.

On Sunday, even the cheerleaders lacked ooomph and Mexican waves were more like a Mexican siesta.

Even before the England and New Zealand final, many were making their way home or else heading for the nearest bar as the skies opened and looked like sucking everyone in.

It was a sad ending to one of the highlights of Hong Kong’s sporting calendar and time to have a long hard thinking about those corporate boxes and why companies like unknown wine companies and other mates of the two major sponsors- HSBC and Cathay Pacific.
