What a brilliant finish to the 4000 metre Group 1 Royal Ascot Gold Cup where Ryan Moore on Estimate and Johnny Murtagh fought out the finish and with neither giving an inch.
Watching this duel on Ascot’s Ladies Day and cheering on her horse was a very familiar looking sweet old lady who has always loved her horse racing: Her Majesty The Queen.
Murtagh was on Simenon for his connections whereas Moore was doing his best to win the race for his owner who happened to be Her Majesty The Queen.
Think Johnny Murtagh or Ryan Moore were thinking about winning or even losing as there was so much history involved. We very much doubt it.
These two great jockeys were riding to win for their owners and their own pride and honor.

The Queen might have been in The Royal Box with Princesses Beatrice and Eugene and others, but Moore and Murtagh were in charge of how this script would end on that Ascot turf.
Moore on Estimate prevailed by a neck and The Queen became the first reigning monarch of England to win this race at Ascot.
Prince Philip, who has recently been fighting his own battles in hospital, was not there to be with Her Majesty, but this win must have been the greatest tonic he needed as he watched the Duke Of York present the Cup to the country’s favourite “mum” and “grandmother”.

No one could have written a more perfect script and which would make one helluva great ‘feel good’ movie. Perhaps one day someone will produce this movie.
But for right here and now, the image of horse racing received a right Royal boost and showed that a horse owner is just another horse owner with The Queen expecting nothing in return other than to see her horse win- like any other owner.
