Let’s get rid of the obvious first: Joao Moreira has a full book of rides.
Is it a quality book? Not really, but the rider is not called The Magic Man for nothing and might be able to conjure up one or two extra legs on some slow sacks of spuds.
Having said this, I worry for the Magic Man.
Though one understands that Jerry Green- and he is a knowledgable racing man I respect- is helping to get him his rides, the very tough and impatient Hong Kong owners who have always had a rivalry with Singaporean businessmen and owners, were asking loudly after race four last Sunday if Moreira has enough tricks to compete in Hong Kong- very unfair for a new jockey to these shores, but gawd knows, this city is a tough nut to crack- even if a magical Brazilian nut.
Meanwhile, after a number of meetings without a ride for the stable, Douglas Whyte has a ride for John Size- Red Dancer in Race 3.
The master trainer’s other runners have gone to Moreira, Tye Angland, who seems to be very much in demand by the astute and laidback Size and for good reason- Tye is a damn fine jockey- and Keith ML Yeung.
From a punting point of view, beware The Ides Of March even though it’s October as whenever there are huge Six Up and Triple Trio jackpots as there are tonight at Happy Valley, upsets are always on the cards and following tipsters and odds are futile.
Like Danesouth and Shiny Day a few meetings ago and Benno Yung’s first winner as a trainer on Sunday which even he didn’t think had a winning chance and whose name I can’t remember, upsets pop up like zits and splatter bets to bits.
Looking at the card and never ever betting on the first two races until I see the way the track is riding, these are the horses I like- hopefully, a few with some odds on their side.
