The Hong Kong Tourist Association which must be living in their own la la land and playing with the fairies for way too long, have thought long and hard with their ad agency and decided this city should be called Happy@Hongkong.
This is why they get the Big Bucks- “innovative” and bang-on “strategic thinking.”
There is also the theme about “Hong Kong being our home” or some such bollocks with the ubiquitous Jacky Cheung taking over from Jackie Chan as Hong Kong’s Tourism Ambassador- he’s moved most of his assets to Singapore- and who wails a mournful dirge as the theme song for Happy@Hongkong.
That’s why HE gets paid the Big Bucks.
The truth of the matter is that this type of advertising does more than good and is a total waste of the taxpayer’s money as (A) they have no say in these government campaigns and (B) it’s all bollocks.
Hong Kong is a miserable city rocked by scandal after scandal involving the rich and the powerful.
Every day, a new Humpty Dumpty is revealed as being another “corrupt official” while the government does the soft-shoe boogie and backtracks even more.
They just pray that the one about the former Chief Executive, the former Pope and the former Prime Minister of Italy- plus the role in this menage-a-trois of our useless old mate with the government named Duncan Pescod.
Pescod is the Yes, Minister who duped the public with unmitigated hype about CreateHK- another Hong Kong oxymoron- and will weasel his way out of any criticism while pushing for his golden handshake.
But these and the veiled threats of Li Ka-shing to take his ball and go home and his open animosity at the Monty Python team led by that nincompoop CY Leung lurks in the background and makes puppets of a media that has forgotten how to think.
The South China Morning Post a great newspaper? Maybe twenty years ago. Today it’s used for kitty litter.
Today, it’s puffery and on its last legs. Then again, most of what made Hong Kong a great city are on their last legs.
But where Hong Kong is at its weakest are the people- the little people- who have no idea about things like true friendship, have trust issues and are constantly thinking how to get the most out of someone- and if they can’t give you anything, drop them out of their lives as they are losers.
That’s not just tough love, that’s becoming reclusive, a fake and a user.
However, this is what Happy@Hongkong has become- a paranoid city where no one trusts anyone as they have been let down so many times that they don’t have any other cheeks to turn and are battered and bruised from lies, liars and users, abusers and full-time fakers.
