They may not have any winning factors, speed maps, weights and measures and lost as to who’s stiff and who’s not, but these three female newbies to horse racing base their choices- they’re not tips- on the Chinese names of horses which are totally different to some of the English names they’re saddled with along with the riders doing the steering. Helping them out whenever possible is a right Charlie.
Are they successful? Armed with a modicum of information and refusing to listen to professional tipsters, their strike rate is really pretty good. Make what you will with what’s suggested below. An asterisk (*) denotes the races that have piqued their interest.
As for tips, their winners are any restaurant or bar owned and managed by their friends at Maximal Concepts where six of our leading jockeys were recently found at a photo shoot for an upcoming campaign.

With eight of the ten runners racing up a class, it’s difficult to know which of these has the most upside. Three of the runners are from the John Size yard and two from that of Tony Cruz. The controversial Hong Kong Bet takes his place here with regular rider Karis Teetan on Waldorf, the other Cruz runner in the race. Derek Leung takes the reins on HKB. The one they all have to beat: Amazing Star with the Zac Attack aboard.

Race 8
A pretty difficult race to figure out made even more difficult with Dances With Dragon which saw the extremely unfortunate Alberto Sanna brought up on a riding and handling charge which saw the end of his riding career in Hong Kong. We have our own opinions about that and it’s interesting to see that the horse has quickly changed stables. Hmmmmm.
Now with Caspar Fownes, Zac Purton aboard and taking a class drop, he’s the really interesting runner in the race. Whether Fownes has had the time to work the oracle on this new addition to his stable is the question, but, then again, Zac Purton wouldn’t be riding Dances With Dragon for the fresh air. One would think he would have been offered the ride on High Rev.
Also racing down a class, the galloper who would prefer a longer trip has Blake Shinn aboard, who is still to live up to the huge reputation he brought with him from Sydney where he was one of the leading riders.
With just eight winners on the board so far this season, tonight might just bring some good feng shui for the rider- and comes before a flying trip to Sydney to ride the John Thompson trained Dreamforce in the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes on Saturday.

Interesting to see Derek Leung on the Cruz runner Californiadeepshot with Karis Teetan, below, who has partnered the galloper at his only two starts in Hong Kong on top weight and the very much in form Highly Proactive.
Californiadeepshot made a huge impression by winning on its debut and much was expected from the galloper by the betting public. But a tired looking fifth was all he managed.
That run was too bad to be true and if he had pulled up with any type of irregularity, a trainer with the knowledge and experience of Tony Cruz wouldn’t be running him.
The booking of Derek Leung might surprise some as he’s rarely used by the trainer, but here is a very good jockey who often flies under the radar and delivers.
We believe he can deliver again tonight though it’s not going to be an easy task.
