Who can ever forget that memorable Wednesday two seasons ago when he saddled up six winners- and when Brett Prebble also rode six winners.
We even produced a video to celebrate that occasion- and which still moves us today.
This season, Caspar Fownes has had a somewhat slow start by his lofty standards to living up to his title of “King Of The Valley.”
To be perfectly frank, his strike rate last season at Shatin was just as good as that of the Valley, but some titles and perceptions stick.
Though having saddled up seven winners at the Valley track so far this season, there haven’t been the doubles and trebles- and even six-timers- we have come to expect from “Cas”, one of the most popular trainers in Hong Kong- a real Hong Kong boy who can speak fluent Cantonese- and Punjabi- and impersonate- perfectly- a number of well-known local racing personalities!
When we spoke to him recently, he was bullish and mentioned how a “big day is around the corner, mate.”
Will Wednesday be the day?
Looking at his horsepower, it could well be- and as long as he is helped with some good barrier draws- so important when tackling the tight Happy Valley track.
On Wednesday, the Fownes stable has last-start winner Gracytom, Perfect Ten, Snitzel Kid, Many Gains and Private Road running and with each baking up over the same course and distances where they at least ran into the first four placings.
There is also Sam The Tailor’s Green Zone which raced as Sparkle in Sydney entered and which gave the popular Indian owner his first winner in over a decade.
Though a huge plunge on his new runner for his stable- Longwah Supreme- went horribly astray on Sunday- no one knows the reason for the plunge- this Wednesday could easily see “Cas” dancing with joy again- and perhaps even breaking into song.
