The new way of looking at horse racing

IS DESIGNS ON ROME ALREADY HOME AND DRY IN THE BMW DERBY?

Even without the running of the BMW Derby, Sunday’s racing at Shatin promises to be one of the highlights of the racing calendar.

Wait: We take that back. No, it won’t.

It really is a very good card and with the added attraction of having two young guns from Oz- Tommy Berry and James McDonald- flown out especially to ride in the day’s big race.

McDonald is being brought to Hong Kong by well-known owner Dr Gene Tsoi to ride his Mr Gnocchi, an outsider in the race, whereas the popular Tommy Berry will, as many know, partner the John Moore-trained Designs On Rome which will have everything to suit and start the short-priced favorite to beat stablemate Able Friend with Magic Man Moreira aboard.

The last time these two met, Berry, having ridden both horses previously, gave a perfect tactical ride to beat the brilliant Magic Man at his own game, something which can be seen on the Racing Touch app- download it for free onto your iPad from the Apple App Store- along with the performances of the other runners.

Though most are expecting John Moore to dominate the race and even fill the top four placings with his runners, the trainer has made it clear that one horse in the race not with his stable- the Aga Khan-bred and Michael Chang-trained Dibayani with Zac Purton aboard- is peaking at just the right time and could represent a real danger.

Win, lose or draw, The BMW Derby and the other races on the card promise a great day of racing.
