Local punters are a very superstitious lot and so, when a trainer or jockey is having their birthday or their wife or girlfriend or even boyfriend is celebrating a birthday, well, then, this is a sign from above and straight from the horse’s mouth that there will be a birthday gift to themselves in the form of a winner. If only life was so easy and giving!
So, with Wednesday being the 51st birthday of trainer Tony “Millie” Millard aka “Juju” Millard, the thought is that with four runners entered for the all-weather meeting- and we loathe these races- he MUST have a winner.
His runners are Lifeline Elite, Masquerader, Supreme Hong Kong and first-starter Great Sky. The first two have placed on the confusing all-weather track with Masquerader coming to Hong Kong with a big wrap but being a disappointment to date. Lifeline Elite has run second to the very inexpensive purchase Green Zone and which raced as Sparkle in NSW. The others- both sired by Elusive Quality whose progeny somehow take to Hong Kong in a very big way, especially, on this going- make their all-weather debut and so it’s a guessing game as to how they’ll fair.
Despite, perhaps some good trackwork and trials in Shatin and which is where Supreme Hong Kong has done all its preparation, the all-weather surface at Happy Valley is very different and becomes even more baffling when the racing is at night. As one jockey told us, the going is almost “gluey.”
“Millie” Millard is a very good trainer and has a very strong team around him including former jockey Carol Yu and wife Beverley who is an astute judge and trackwork rider.
Despite shunning the media, the trainer does his winners do the talking and the Millard stable has been yapping in recent weeks.
Here’s wishing Tony “Millie/Juju” Millard a big one and having to remark that he stills looks hot as hell in a pair of hot pants and which drives many at trackwork quite crazy- especially the horses. Us? We prefer Beverley Millard. Below is “Millie” after a little too much birthday cake.
