The new way of looking at horse racing

MAKING IT AN EVEN HAPPIER HAPPY WEDNESDAY

Call us biased, but the coolest thing in horse racing today is the HKJC’s Happy Wednesday brand.

Looking at what else is around to give racing something edgy, taking in a Happy Wednesday night at Happy Valley Racecourse is equal parts Fellini, Tarantino and Stephen Chao.

A Happy Wednesday night can lead to a Wong kar-wai Thursday morning down Dylan’s Highway 61 where the clowns and the poets do tricks for you- but by then, who cares?

Can the Happy Wednesday brand be cooler? Like anything, there is always room for improvement, everything can be enhanced and anything can be moulded into whatever Shapes Of Things the Yardbirds once sang about.

But as a major baby step towards attracting that fickle, pickled and cynical Gen C needing to be constantly tickled and brought up and inspired by Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, a DIY world, apps to get them from here to anywhere at the touch of a button, a Happy Wednesday Night, which, at the start, had to prove itself to racing’s hardcore naysayers, is here to stay.

Today, ask even these former Nah Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Goodbyes and they’ll gladly admit that like the old Monkees hit, they are believers. They have been to the church with the Blues Brothers and have seen the light.

The thought of racing on a Wednesday night at Happy Valley without the buzz of the Beer Garden and its ‘live’ music, the connectivity of the betting playground that is Adrenaline, the kaleidoscopic view and dinner at Gallery and, very key, the inter-activity of a diverse group of people is extremely hard to imagine.

If people are strange, it doesn’t matter here. Even if they are, they become Shiny Happy R.E.M. People.

It’s a magic elixir or the Kool-Aid and somewhere Racing Victoria Chief Steward Terry “Madcap” Bailey desperately needs to visit and add some fun into his morose personality. Oh, and Terry, bring that RSN media Village Idiot with you. You know, the one who thinks that those who tweet are “the new hecklers”.

Don’t just ask us about a Happy Wednesday night of racing, ask the jockeys- Dougie, Zac, Tommy etc- and how pumped up they get going down to the barriers and being cheered on by all those fillies, mare and wannabe stud muffins lined along the edge of the Beer Garden- and returning to hi-fives after winning a race.

This is LITERALLY bringing racing to fans- hardcore and rookies- and making it up close and personal.

It is ammunition for the future happening now- and happening CONSISTENTLY and not waiting for one or two big race meetings or a yearly carnival or able to say you saw the Queen waive at you at Ascot.

This is a When Harry met Pippa, Wills and Kate kinda crowd.

This is a crowd that’s learning that the Sport Of Kings is also for “commoners” and who have much in common with many of those who are the main attractions in racing.

These are young riders like the Berry twins, Zac Purton, Matthew Chadwick, the more worldly and experienced racing personalities like Dougie Whyte, Richard Gibson, Tony Cruz, Caspar Fownes, Jo McKinnon, Jenny Chapman, Dennis Yip and his own designer jeans, many owners- and their families and friends- who have a life beyond the punt.

They like and want their music, they know their clubs, the restaurants, the designers and, in a nutshell, know how to have a bloody good time- and where.

They can get down with the best of them and not in some archaic KC And The Sunshine Band disco nights manner. Well, perhaps Bro Tony Cruz still does.

As an “exercise of interest”, we’ve been asking visitors to our site to give us someone or something- one thing or one person- that they feel can add to or inspire or be part of the Cool Factor of a Happy Wednesday Night- and Hong Kong racing.

Here’s Your Top Ten Hit List received, some of which we don’t understand- but that’s also cool- and Thanks, everyone for the feedback and to some, the mammaries.

It’s an eye-opener and here’s hoping that eyes, ears and minds are open as racing evolves and continues to present itself in new ways while retaining the basics of a sport that needs a Steve Jobs Of Racing to lead it into its next phase.
