The new way of looking at horse racing

MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO

THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

We were at one of the few clubs that offer ‘live’ music. Nothing wrong with that, but what gives the performers a warped sense of importance is the audience clapping like trained chimpanzees.

It happens so darn frequently and in so many venues which shows that so many don’t have any idea as to what’s good or bad or mediocre.

This night, the singer hit sharp and flat notes, nothing came together, but yet, everyone was very polite, waited for someone to start the Shirley Ellis Clapping Song before joining in. It was like the Gong Show. And then when the ubiquitous black singer came onstage as a special guest and despite being pretty out of it, the chimpanzees clapped again. All she needed to do was wail.

It was like all those television talent shows where anyone who hits a high note or roars like Cocker Power, makes audiences break out in rapturous applause.

Why, gawd, why? Even if the notes are way off key, there is this stupid clapping.

One thing it proved once again is that especially when it comes to that thing called “jazz”, most audiences wish so much to be part of some elitist movement that clapping like trained chimps is their way of joining this pretentious club.

And one more thing: Especially in Asia, very average and often ancient Black singers are elevated to God-like status.

Sorry, but most are crap and are in this part of the world because they can sing every “soul” cliche uttered by Barry White and Isaac Hayes and this is wildly applauded by an audience stupidly thinking that if it’s black, baby, it must be good.

It very rarely is and these singers are not bad muthas or even bros. They are cons who’ve found some gullible wannabe soulsters.
