The new way of looking at horse racing

MUSIC ROCKS & HORSES FOR COURSES

We have been swamped with requests and questions from various local bands and international bands – and bands from other parts of the region – as to how they can perform at the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Happy Wednesday events.

At a time when venues are a scarcity in Hong Kong and are usually booked up for weeks on end for Canto-Pop rituals – of course, a venue like the Happy Valley racecourse – and the Shatin course – offer some great opportunities for gigs. But, hold your horses here!

There are races to run and this is the priority – along with ensuring that nothing fucks up the actual race tracks.

It’s nothing personal, just business.

Yes, Music might Rock the Valley, but it needs to be done through baby steps and various stages.

The other thing to bear in mind is that race-goers are not exactly looking for the Kings Of Cool.

They want Tub-thumping Chumbawamba music – beer-fuelled good-time, FUN rock’n roll and music familiar to their ears.

It’s not exactly an eclectic crowd.

There’s a time and place for everything though we do believe that the band General Luna will go down very well at the Valley.

These girls are not just pretty faces.

Their songs might need some stronger hooks, but as musos, they can rock it with the best of them and Bea, the drummer, especially, is FAN-TASTIC.

Plus we have an enormous crush on her.

We’re suckers for women who are musicians.

Meanwhile, as for Music Rockin’ The Valley at least for the time being, it has to be baby steps – again – there are races to run, form to be studied, beer and wines to be downed and bets to be placed.

With even the onstage tipsters being pretty much ignored by race-goers, all we hope is that the HKJC are able to have a permit to hold regular Music Rocks The Valley events on non-race-days.

Or, after one of the big race meetings in Shatin such as the International Races.

Imagine one band representing each country competing.

Now, this would make the event truly International and bring in an entirely new race-goer.

In the meantime, send us your videos, bios and we’ll see what we can do to give your music – as long as it’s not crap – the promotions it might need.

Don’t mention it.
