The new way of looking at horse racing

MUSIC ROCKS THE VALLEY- AND- GIDDY UP- THE HKJC

MUSIC ROCKS THE VALLEY 1

Music is all about timing. And with the start of the series of Music Rocks The Valley events starting on Wednesday at Happy Valley, comes the news that the Hong Kong Jockey Club has created a bit of musical history.

The HKJC has become the only racing club we know to have a best-selling download on the iTunes chart.

This has happened through the release of Giddyup, this season’s theme song for the Club’s Happy Wednesday evenings which has zoomed up the Hong Kong iTunes chart to become the second most downloaded track. Giddy Up, indeed.

In another first, the track with its horse racing theme, was released by Universal Music with Ben Semmens, the Welsh singer-songwriter behind the track, signed as an artist to what is the largest music company in the world. And here lies another first- and another story.

Ben Semmens, a fine Wales-based singer-songwriter, has received his biggest career boost by being flown to Hong Kong to become a regular performer this racing season at the HKJC’s Beer Garden and venue known as Adrenaline which, every Wednesday, attracts between 16-18,000 race-goers- a much more casual and new generation of race-goer that follows the races on the track and all the other entertainment provided off the track.

It really is the most fun anyone can have with their clothes on- though, there are those moments when, in the heat of the moment, certain garments do come off.

As for the Welsh boyo Semmens, pictured below with the hosts of Finding Happy Wednesday, coming up is the recording of four originals for an American television series written with music executive Hans Ebert, who also co-wrote Giddy Up, and which are described as being “Rocktronic” tracks- far better than having rocks in one’s head.
