NIGHTS OF THE CHINESE LIVING DEAD

When we talk about charms and potions, what do you think about? Harry Potter?

What if we talk about Chinese charms? Any idea?

There are many weird and wonderful and spooky stories in China including what is known as “corpse herding in Western of Wunan” and which takes place in Wunan province.

In ancient times, when people left their homes to town for work and to ensure their afterlife in case of any unforeseen accidents, or being killed from natural and even human disasters, they took precautions that they would be buried in the villages where they were born.

So what happens when there is a bottleneck and the “delivery process” of burials at one time happens?

This is when the “corpse herding in Western of Wunan” comes into play.

A Taoist monk will use magic to make the corpses “walk” – actually they “jump” – “home”.

But that’s too long a story to get into here.

Apart from “corpse herding”, “Chen Zhou Charms” is another popular and famous spooky thing from the Western part of Wunan.

We don’t know whether it is hearsay or fact, but it is said that during World War I, many soldiers died far away from their native villages.

As they already knew this might be a journey where they might not return home, they had charms conjured-up for themselves before they left. As with India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines etc, charms in China could be of a good-nature, rather than evil and where curses are place on people.

So, in this instance, even if they died in war, they remained alive because of their “charmed lives”. These “living dead” soldiers could walk home and only once there, would they die.

During their return journey, they are said to have no consciousness at all, but they’re neither zombies nor vampires. They are still very much human before they reach home.

Amazing? Horrible? Unbeliveable? Whatever!!

Just Google in the Chinese characters “辰州符” for Chen Zhou Charms and you will find many stories about this.
