Our Top 10 Young Guns

There are tons of young Jockeys shaking up the racetracks around the world. FastTrack have come up with a list of our top 10 favorite up and coming young Jockeys. In no particular order:

1. Kathy O’Hara

The Australian’s first major winner was AUNTY BETTY in 2007 and her first Group One winner was in the 2012 Coolmore Classic.



Last season Kathy O’Hara rode 36 winners and, this season she has ridden 45 winners.

2. Callan Murray

This young South African only finished his apprenticeship in January and went on to quickly win 3  Grade One winners at the Champions Day meeting at Turffontein. He has also spent time riding in Melbourn and has now come to Hong Kong!

3. Derek Leung

This Hong Kong is currently the leading local rider with 24 wins under his belt this season. He is probably in line to win the Tony Cruz award.

He is a product of the Hong Kong Apprentice Jockey’s School however, he did his initial training in New Zealand. What makes him more worthy of a place on this list? Well, he won the Asian Young Guns Challenge award in 2010.

4. Kyla Nisbet

Working for her father John Nisbet this Australian jockey has not had an easy time. Having recovered from an epileptic seizure she has only just started to ride again.

She won the apprentice jockey’s premiership at both Canberra and Goulburn. Being only 22 with racing in her blood we are expecting wonderful things from her.

5. Sam Clipperton

The 23-year-old Australian rising star left school at 15 and joined the same stable of Ron Quinton. He was a two-time champion apprentice and moved onto winning the Coolmore Classic and All Aged Stake. He currently sits within the top 10 Jockeys of Syndey! He has had 39 winners this Hong Kong season and is doing Australia proud.

6. Karis Teetan

The Mauritian jockey started riding in Hong Kong in 2013.  He won the Hong Kong Classic Cup, HKG2 premier bowl, HKG3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup and many other notable race wins.

7. Regan Bayliss

This young Auzzie jockey won the Adelaide Cup on his 20th birthday! Blessed by a streak of fantastic good luck everyone is expecting amazing this from this jockey. Being known to have won 5 winners in just one night this young jockey is one to watch!

8. Chad Schofield

Son of the South African jockey Glyn Schofield racing is in Chad’s DNA. This season chad has had 27 wins in Hong Kong. Chad and his father made history in 2014 as the first father and son to compete against each other in the Melbourne Cup and at Sha Tin on 14 February, 2016 they became the first in Hong Kong to ride against each other. Chad has won notable races such as the Queensland Derby, HKG3 Wueen Mother Memorial Cup and the Champagne Stakes.

9. Katelyn Mallyon



Katelyn Mallyon’s at the age of 22 was the youngest female jockey to ride in the melbourn cup. She turned down a New York modeling career to become a very successeful young jockey. Her first Group One winner was Silent Sedition in the 2017 Keogh Homes William Reid Steaks. Her career has not been easy, she has had serious falls that have cause major injuries but this has not stopped her determination. We are all very excited to see what is instore for Katelyn’s career.

10.  Rachael Murray

Having started out as a work rider she worked hard and worke her way up to the top. This year Rachel Murray made racing history at Tamworth when she became the first NSW female jockey to ride 100 winners in a season. She most certianly deserves to be on this list!
