Keep them wanting more, leave while the going’s good, know when you’re just not happening- all this was ignored at Peel Fresco’s Open Mic session last night.
Sure, one can say, “But it was an Open Mic Session, so what do you expect?” to which I’d reply, “No self-indulgence.”
Apart from the French musos who went up onstage with a very good drummer playing for both bands plus a tres jolie female bass guitarist, the rest of the players that night, other than very good guitarist Sujit, just played and played and played and drove out what was one of the more eclectic audiences I have seen in Hong Kong in a long time- Brazilians, French, British, Indian, Chinese and an absolutely stunning lady who left when one of the doodlers just doodled became for way too long and bored her shitless.
Meanwhile, just to show that the play-for-free bollocks are alive and well, some of those behind that Music Mumbles confab in Swingabore, approached singer-songwriter Ben Semmens and his band to play at the event- in 2015.
Well, as I tipped, the moment they asked for payment for travel, accommodation and a performance fee, there was zero reply.
Guess their budget is being blown getting one of those Black Eye Peas who jumps around and unknown to many. And no, it’s not the Filipino guy who was out here trying to launch his line of sneakers.
Speaking of Ben Semmens, here’s a recording of an original recorded ‘live’ at Adrenaline in the Happy Valley Racecourse.
