He was well known for many things- his temper, his distrust of Hong Kong music companies, recording contracts, publishing contracts, his anger at Filipino musicians under-cutting local musicians and, therefore, lowering the fees paid for gigs- but, despite, often erratic behaviour, Donald Ashley was famous for being Hong Kong’s best ever Rock drummer.
With bands like Ramband and Chyna, The Don brought real hard rock to Hong Kong amidst the snoozefest of ponderous Canto-pop ballads.
As a session musician, he could be difficult, but when you know you’re the best, one tends to push everyone’s patience and everyone’s buttons.
Though swearing never to use him again, every Canto-Pop singer always went back to this unique looking Eurasian kid with the long multi-coloured hair, six pack and Hong Kong’s one and only Drum God.
Donald Ashley, 61, passed away last night. He had lost his wife two months earlier and it was almost as if he wanted to lose his fight against lung cancer.
Be happy, old friend. For once, be happy and let the anger and frustration subside.
