In the Seventies, Sam Hui was The Voice Of Hong Kong.
This was when he came up with what was dubbed Canto-Rock.
Canto-Rock was very different to the syrupy and big ballad songs which drone on as Canto-Pop.
More like Canto-Pap smears to our ears and with every song sounding the same, Canto-Pop has reduced Hong Kong’s Chinese music “scene” into a whimpering, simpering dollop of syrupy pathos.
As for Canto-Rock, it was British Pop-meeting-colloquial Cantonese lyrics about everyday Hong Kong life which flowed from the fertile mind of Sam Hui.
As a former Hong Kong University student, the now very private Sam has come out to write and record a song for his old alumni.
If you were to listen carefully, you can also hear him singing in the background.
We reckon “Fat Bastard” should have crashed the session and bellowed through the session.
