The new way of looking at horse racing

SHE’S A BONNIE LASS

We have to hand it to Hong Kong socialite and taste maker Bonnie Gokson: When she does anything, she does it with style and money be damned.

Some might call it over-the-top and pretentious, but they’d be jobs for saying that.

We remember when our Bonnie brought Natalie Cole for a show in Hong Kong many years ago.

At that time, Miss Natalie was going through a few problems and not the easiest person to deal with.

What a lavish affair it was with a tent for VIPs to feast on hors d’ouvres, caviar and drink champagne.

Then, before Ms Cole appeared onstage, Bonnie Gokson suddenly ascended from the middle of the audience on some elevated stage and Spoketh to her Followers.

It was her Birthday and she wanted to thank everyone for showing up. And then gushed.

There was not a dry seat in the house.

As part of Bonnie Gokson Productions, she next brought out Kenny G and, this too, was quite a media event and a MUST attend affair.

One of our fondest memories was Kenny G serenading Dear Bonnie.

With the concert production business being a bust for many, she then disappeared for some time and returned a couple of years ago to start up the 5-star restaurant that is Sevva.

A few months ago, she decided to do something about her craving for cakes: She opened her own – what else? – up-market cake shop.

This week, Sevva – and Sevva is Bonnie Gokson – announced that on October 29-30 and together with Quincy Jones Productions, the venue hosts Cuban jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez – hailed by the legendary Mighty Q who has been spending more and more time in Shanghai, as “an absolute genius” and “one of the most profound musicians I have ever seen” – with jazz bassist, guitarist and vocalist Richard Bona.

Dinner/show tickets are priced at HK$2,200 on October 29, the first night.

Rodriguez and Bona are worth every cent and both absolutely brilliant.

This show is in conjunction with the release of a compilation CD called Sevva Sounds and which brings together some of the newest names in Jazz.

As we said, once Bonnie Gokson decides to do something, she does it with style, flair and a bloody heap load of money.

She just needs to be wary of the vultures and sycophants.

And Hong Kong has many of these.
