The new way of looking at horse racing

SHOULD BARRIER DRAWS HOLD FEAR AT SHATIN THIS AFTERNOON?

It doesn’t happen often, but when it rains, it pours.

Skimming through this afternoon’s card for Shatin, almost every runner that’s certain to be in the money have bad barrier draws- Excellent Proposal (14), The Rock (10), Winning Dreamer (12), Beluga (13), Monkey Jewellery (10), and Inno Legend (10).

These barriers plus a consistent drizzle could make thinking of betting today a No Go zone.

So what does this mean? Well, either give the meeting a wide berth and instead go rock climbing or else throw caution to the wind and believe that wide barrier draws won’t stop, especially good young horses like Winning Dreamer, Beluga and Excellent Proposal from winning.

That, or else err on the side of caution and play quinella place roll ups by boxing up three horses in three chosen races and hope for the best.

Taking a Six Up and Treble can go two ways: If the favourites salute- for example, The Rock wins the eighth, Winning Dreamer wins Race 9, Excellent Proposal takes out the last and this would pay tuppence.

Of course, one can flirt with danger, leave these favourites out and hope some roughies salute and it could be five star dining with all the trimmings tonight.

Personally, it’s not an attractive looking card, especially when looking at the first three races. With these, a watching brief is advised.

If deciding to get involved from race 4 onwards, I would either take a 4×1 or even 6×1 place roll up comprising runners around the 2.1 mark and hope for the best. Either that or throw caution to the wind and take Beluga, Winning Dreamer and Excellent Proposal as a multi win bet for a sizeable outlay.

Having said this, a warning: The last race is not going to be a stroll in the park for Excellent Proposal.

It’s the best race on the card and the most competitive. It’s a race where Assimilate (6), Amazing One Plus (5), Savvy Nine (2), and, perhaps Lakeshore Eagle (4), all have winning chances. And if taking a quartet, one could do worse than to include Sunshine Warrior (13) and Flying Quest (14).
