The Indian and the far smaller Sri Lankan markets are pretty much kept under wraps by International artists. Why?
These artists are extremely well paid to perform in India- some might say they are overpaid- and are treated like royalty.
India remains a strange market in that it is divided between the new and the old- a very lucrative market for old school rockers like Judas Priest, Deep Purple etc- and a younger generation of music fans who have become huge supporters of an artist like Akon.
Apart from making some big bucks and rupees for concerts, these artists are also paid very well for appearance fees and producing the occasional track for one of those all-singing, all-dancing Bollywood musicals.
Apart from Akon, others promoters in India wet themselves over are J-Lo, Nicole Scherzinger, Drake, L’il Wayne and Snoop Dogg.
In fact, come January, the Dogg who we thought had changed his name to something like Snoop Lion, performs in Delhi and Pune in India for the first time.
Wait and see: With the economies in the US and Europe down the toilet, more and more artists like the Big Dogg and Akon will be spending more and more time in India and Sri Lanka, the latter being a small market but with investors and wannabe promoters waiting to throw some ridiculously high big bucks at the feet of, especially, rappers, who would never ever make this kinda money in the States.
