The new way of looking at horse racing

SUNDAY SHOUTOUT FOR SHATIN

Just when one starts to think that horse racing is only about turnover, tips, the punt and “fill ups”, amateur photographer Wallace Wan captures a moment like the one above: Trainer David Ferraris showing some much deserved love after his stable stalwart Nitro Express won his first race in four years at Happy Valley Racecourse on Wednesday. Looking on with respect and admiration is winning rider Joao Moreira. Good to see.

Long live romance- and the great Romancer

To those in Australia tweeting asking if anyone backed Romancer, the 126-1 smooth-talking winner of the Listed Straight Six at Flemington yesterday trained by Graeme Begg and ridden by apprentice Lachlan Neindorf, actually, yes.

One of the very few winning was a rather attractive young lawyer in Hong Kong whose legal eagle eye somehow caught the galloper’s name, she liked what she saw and asked an Uncle in Melbourne to help her back it- just for fun.

Deciding to also try her luck for the first time at picking a Quaddie, she was calling on 8,9,12,16 in the last leg.

9 came first and the others formed the First Four. The Quaddie returned a respectable AUS$51,748 for an outlay of around AUS$1000.

Lesson learned: Sometimes, too much information is a dangerous thing. Ignorance can be bliss. And, Don’t Doubt Dory. Never.

The return of Power (and some Housekeeping)

Remember a Hong Kong galloper named I Am Power, owned by Derek Tang and trained by the venerable Peter Ho?

You know, Peter Ho, the multiple winner of the HKJC’s Safest And Best Housekeeping Stable Award? Never heard of the award?

Surprisingly, the somewhat enigmatic Ho stable has NO RUNNERS competing at Shatin on Sunday. Maybe he somehow managed to get to Rosehill and watch I Am Power race after almost two years- and win for very good and very successful Trainer Mark Newnham? Or maybe Ho was working on snaring another Best Housekeeping award? We know.

PARTING SHOT

Watch the surprising simulcast from Kranji yesterday? Miss it? Lucky. Very.

Watch it in between the races from Doomben, Flemington, Rosehill and, well, Wadonga? Shell shocked? Far more appreciative of racing from Townsville?

Confused? Flummoxed trying to follow who was what and what was leading because of the lack of numbers during the races? Still wondering the point of it all? Danny Beasley is still riding in riding? Who killed JR? Where in the world is Carmen Santiago?
