It seems to be something inevitable. If you cut salaries in smaller local leagues, the good players will leave the country and opt for leagues which are higher in standard and salary.
Unless they’re fully committed to their country, they see no point in staying. As a result, some fans get turned off.
And that’s one of the main reasons why the standard between leagues is widening.
As a long time football fan, I remember a few years back when I told somebody that I was watching the HKFA Cup, to which they replied “I prefer watching European leagues rather than Hong Kong’s because foreigners play better!”

What has happened to local team pride? What has happened to the love of the game?
That’s the way for fans to support the sport in their respective countries. After all, it is the biggest international sport in the world.
It’s the naysayers that are also helping fuel the decline in the standard of local leagues. So do football in your country a favour.
Support your local leagues. Football in general will be better for it.
