The new way of looking at horse racing

THE FAST TRACKER WONDERS IF MAGIC WILL STRIKE AT HAPPY WEDNESDAY TONIGHT

It’s been a very very long time since we’ve felt that Magic might strike in a David Blaine kinda way at a Happy Wednesday race meeting- meaning the night when Joao Moreira shows off his complete bag of tricks at the city track.

Though amongst the winners, there’s seldom been the same absolute domination unleashed at Sha Tin which, in case one forgets, includes an eight timer plus numerous winning quintets, quartets and trebles. But with the ominous figure of the Zac Attack looming in his rear view mirror and closing in on his lead, the next few meetings are when we might see The Return of the Moreira The Magician. And looking at his book of rides tonight, according to form students, it could be raining rabbits at the last night of the Korean promotion.

Of course, books lie, and even if Joao Moreira does have some excellent chances none will offer any value plus with the dodgy weather about, it might be raining cats and dogs instead of rabbits.

As correctly predicted on Saturday regarding the chances of favourite Harmony Hero, we really couldn’t have it when saw it drawn barrier 11 on the usual leader-dominated C+3 course over 1400m and racing in Hong Kong after only two starts for two wins in Australia.

He might be a galloper with potential, but realising this potential might take more time than many initially thought. Pulling up lame after the race didn’t help. Instead, we stood out 6 to 1 winner Coby Boy and nabbed the $751 quinella- with Harmony Hero not even running in the first six.

Same with Joao Moreira’s rides tonight. We’ll be looking at which short priced favourites ridden by the popular Brazilian might be vulnerable- very vulnerable. And with us always enjoying taking a Six Up, we’ll follow our strategy of taking the entire field in the first leg- race three- as history has proven that favourites in this race rarely go the distance. They somehow manage to get rolled though going on form Giant Turtle (5) and Har Har Heart (7) look the main chances. But often in racing looks can be deceiving.

Though the more loyal racing enthusiasts will be looking at Champions Day at Sha Tin on Sunday where some of the best Hong Kong gallopers, amongst them that Rebel With A Cause and the Einstein of local racing- the incredibly interesting and intelligent Pakistan Star- will compete against each other and a few foreign raiders, tonight’s mid week card is a good one with a number of overseas racing fans certain to be trackside taking in this curtain raiser.

Though not part of this tour group, seeing what makes a Happy Wednesday a Happy Wednesday will be German rockers Die Toten Hosen following their concert in Hong Kong last night.

Also joining the party will be our good friend Manu Lee who’s done exceptionally well with his very successful brand and product named Burger Joys.

We wouldn’t call them tips as we’re not tipsters, but what’s caught our flights of fancy- and what hasn’t- for the eight races tonight are the following:

RACE 1 Way too difficult to predict. Just chill. Go Korean instead.

RACE 2 Keep eating…
