The card for Sunday is an extremely good one despite a few all-weather races which sends chills down my spine.
Still, it comes down to horses for courses and, I guess, those who grow another leg on this surface need their chances to win.
Speaking of which, Green Zone won the first time it ran on this surface and lines up again on Sunday on one of the all-weather races.
To again to be ridden by Olivier Delouse, it certainly has a chance, especially with the owner- Sam The Tailor aka Manu Melwani- having a very good run of luck.
After over a decade of not having had a winner, he has had wins in the space of a few weeks with Green Zone AND Potential.
My only slight concern is that trainer Caspar Fownes is not in town which, at least to me, means he’s not looking at this meeting that optimistically.
But being the professional that he is and with a well-oiled team looking after his stable, all his runners will be giving their best.
Green Zone, What A Heart and Shining Triumph look a good boxed quinella place bet with Golden Bauhinia being a very good outsider.
Elsewhere, I hear that Tony Cruz is very bullish about having two winners on Sunday and surely Super Genki must be one of them.
Then again, Tony is always bullish but I am happy to see him using the great Gerard Mosse more and more and supporting young Matthew Chadwick.
John Size’s Glorious Day which was soooooooooooo impressive when it made its debut should take out the last of the eleven races- unless it suffers from the dreaded second-up syndrome.
But I doubt it: “Sizey”, pictured below, doesn’t just send horses around for the hell of it.
When he knows he has a good one and has much in hand, they go bang, bang, bang and rack up 3-4 winners in a row.
Glorious Days looks like being one of these horses.
The John Size runner which I am interested in is King Mossman which drops in distance and tackled 1000 metres.
It’s drawn barrier 14 which is the “right side” of the track for this sprint and might be able to take a sit behind the speedsters and save that little bit extra for a finishing burst.
Having said this, it’s not an easy race with at least 5 good chances in the race with those that standout for me being Eagle Regiment, Blaze King, and Eternal Beauty..
Elsewhere, with Brett Prebble suspended, it’s interesting to see Doulas Whyte having one of his rare rides for David Hall in Nicholson.
Hall’s stable is firing on all cylinders and Nicholson is very close to a win.
Those two “Sweeties” clash again in race 9- Captain Sweet and Sweet Orange.
This time, the very good apprentice Vincent CY Ho is used on Captain Sweet to give it some weight release and Tye Angland stays on Sweet Orange.
Many will be expecting these to run the quinella but John Size- again- and Douglas Whyte- again- might have the fly in the ointment with Voile Rouge.
I am extremely confident that the winner and quinella will come from these three horses and am leaning towards the David Ferraris-trained Sweet Orange who looks like taking out Race 7 with his Liberator.
One of the toughest races of the day looks like being Race 6.where the three I like the best being the afore-mentioned Nicholson, Dividend Champion and Easy Gold.
The latter is trained by Richard Gibson and Hong Kong will soon see just how good a trainer he is s he goes about his job is a quiet and unassuming way.
The way he has improved a horse like Great Renown shows just how good he is and it is a real coup for the HKJC to have such a good horseman in their training ranks.
I mean, jeez, here is the trainer who trained the great Dr Dino and recent Melbourne Cup winner Dunnaden to come out and train in Hong Kong!
All in all, it promises to be a very good day of racing where the winners might offer little value though a few outsiders as the legs for quinellas and tierces could be worth adding into your combinations.
Good luck and have a Guru Day at the races!
