The new way of looking at horse racing

THE GURU ON JOAO MOREIRA

Historically, Hong Kong has always had a hard time saying anything nice about Singapore and Singaporeans.

Singaporeans

When in music, we would only give some token respect to our Singapore office. After all, they sold a maximum of around 5,000 legitimate CDs and we had to deal with all those Singaporean la la accents.

Other than going there for a curry at Sammy’s or any of the bamboo leaf restaurants down Railway Street and shagging a few Sarong Party Girls who useless fat cat expats would drool over and leave their wives for, there was nothing there except for the infamous Foor Floors Of Whores and the Ind city in Orchard Street.

Hong Kong looked down on Swingabore until yesterday. This was when jockey Joao Moreira bitch slapped Hong Kong on behalf of Singapore at Happy Valley.

Totally ignored in the Longines Jockey Championship, Moreira showed Hong Kong exactly why he has been Singapore’s champion jockey for so many years.

He’s ridden over something like 200 wins this season and every one of his rivals have nothing but great things to say about the jockey- a hard worker, humble, helpful. And when compliments like these come from a damn fine jockey like Danny Beasley who has seen it all.

Last night at Happy Valley, Joao Moreira was under the radar as the racing pundits went into overdrive and hyped many who are their mates.

Well, on paper, they appeared to have the horses whereas Moreira had some also-rans. But, man, did he make them run for him and made the best of what he had and rode off with the Longines International Challenge.

In very simple terms, he works hard, he plays to win, he is affable, he doesn’t sit there like Ryan Moore as if he swallowed a turd and he has given new respect to the Singapore Turf Club. And what was once Swingabore and is now Swingapore. Hong Kong can do with Joao Moreira. And, who knows how soon that might happen?

god knows
