The new way of looking at horse racing

THE HAPPY WEDNESDAY DAILY

WE’RE HOPPING TO IT AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY

HOP TO IT 1

Though the rather odd trend of raining cats and dogs and outsiders almost every Happy Wednesday continued on the first night of the Happy Wednesday Easter Promotion, it didn’t dampen the spirits of those at Happy Valley Racecourse.

On the racing side of things, there were two significant firsts: Brazilian jockey Eurico Rosa de Silva riding his first winner of his one month stint in Hong Kong on the outsider Mighty Equus, and, more importantly from a long term point of view for racing in the city, very popular female apprentice Kei Chiong, not only riding her first winner at the city track with a very well-judged race, but winning the night’s Cup race in the process on the well-backed Great Charm for trainer Richard Gibson.

The 23-year-old rider has now ridden three winners since returning to action from an injury to her hand, and with her ten pound allowance plus natural improvement, Kei is very much in demand by every trainer. A horse with ten pounds less to carry makes a big difference to its winning chances, and Kei, who has quickly become the Happy Wednesday pinup jockey, and becoming very popular with the female racing fans, is certainly reinforcing this fact.

Away from the racing, up and coming singer-actor Alex Lam, son of Canto-Pop icon George Lam, made a surprise appearance with the band Carnivale at the Beer Garden, and had fans singing and dancing in the rain. On Wednesday, Mr Entertainment himself- Chris Polanco returns, which can only mean one thing: Expect the unexpected!

FAST FORWARD 4

Also present was well-known model Cara G and local singer JW, both there presenting the hats and Easter bonnets designed by Hong Kong milliners Jay Cow and Noeleen Armstrong-Kish.

To round off the night, Joao Moreira turned on his magic show again by winning the last two races on the card with his winner in race 8- Basic Trilogy – being a happy birthday present for the horse’s champion trainer John Moore.

REMINDER: MORE OF AN ADRENALINE RUSH ON WEDNESDAY

REMINDER 2

From this Wednesday, Adrenaline stays open until 11.30pm with more ‘live’ music from the Jennifer Palor Band comprising the best musicians in town including Guitarzan Jay, and drummer Toby.

REMINDER 3

So, instead of rushing out- and probably into a rain-sodden night- come up to the Second Floor of Entrance C, unwind or do a Happy Dance.

REMINDER 5b

Another reminder: Next week, for ONE WEEK ONLY, Happy Wednesday moves to Happy Thursday.

CATH LOVE: WHO’S THAT GIRL?

It’s all still new to her, but instead of being in the peanut gallery and complaining, Catherine Grossrieder, has dived in with both feet to be an integral part of the Happy Wednesday talent pool.

CATH LOVE 1

Being an artist and graphic designer, Catherine aka Cath Love, joined the Happy Wednesday family when working on illustrating a number of posters for the various events and a contemporary fairy tale based around finding this happy place. Watch this space for more news on this.

CATH LOVE 2

Today, Cath plays host to the very popular Dan and Phil’s 7-Second Challenge on YouTube that has now become a regular event at the Beer Garden while also interviewing everyone worth interviewing, and now, the host at Adrenaline. And if you think coaxing many in Hong Kong who are notoriously reticent about being filmed for an interview, let alone a random and irreverent game like the 7-Second Challenge is easy, think again.

Sure, she still has plenty to learn about horse racing, but this hasn’t stopped her from interviewing a leading jockey like Zac Purton and asking him questions anyone new to horse racing would like to know, but would be too nervous to ask. Not Cath. No matter how daft the question might be to that small band of racing purists, this Eurasian beauty- she was born in Bangkok to a Thai mother and Swiss father- has no hesitation in showing she’s not some flatulent know-it-all.

As for other information on Cath, she was brought up in Hong Kong, and has been influenced by a multitude of Asian and Japanese style cartoons, combined with the graffiti and hiphop culture she picked up from her summer vacations in Switzerland in the 90’s. It has moulded the style of her art and design work. The mind’s imagination and her cultural and social conditioning are sources of creativity, and Cath enjoys creating cute as well as more surreal, twisted art hoping that viewers not only appreciate it superficially, but also for what it could communicate to them on a deeper personal level.
