THE SAD, BAD, DESPERATE STATE OF HONG KONG’S RESTAURANT SCENE

THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

When restaurants suddenly say that they’re not open for lunch, it means one thing: Business is bad.

RESTAURANT SCENE 1

And so it is with a number of restaurants in Hong Kong these days that are closed for lunch, open from 6pm to 11pm with last orders at 10.30pm and then closed on Sundays.

Any fool can read the writing on the wall and take bets as to how long it will be before many of these establishments will completely call it quits, or, if lucky, sell it on to the next sucker just as they were sold on a dream and sucker-punched by whoever got them to pay for their white elephant.

RESTAURANT SCENE 5

Down Lan Kwai Fong- those side streets with densely populated bars and cafes- all those lonely and lifeless bars and restaurants sprinkled throughout Soho and Central show either stupidity or cock-eyed optimism. Or both with an extra tablespoonful of stubbornness brought on by being unable to admit the mistake to simply follow the herd without realizing that they were heading over the cliff with no safety net in sight.

People, people, stop thinking of marketing plans and that over-used term called social media. The Fat Lady has sung.

RESTAURANT SCENE 7

Soon, the only people frequenting these bars and restaurants caught between a rock and a hard place will be the usual freeloading foodie bloggers and the SCMP’s ubiquitous food writer Susan Jung who is everywhere and nowhere.

With all the reviews she cranks out, Susan Jung has probably lost her taste buds by now- along with her teeth.

And know what?

The Fat Lady has sung for them, too.
