The new way of looking at horse racing

THE SAD STATE OF CANTO POP

I am so confused.

Here I am at Peel Fresco on a Wednesday night and it’s Canto Pop night and I am sure it’s fun for the packed audience of what is, essentially, a karaoke crowd, but I  just don’t get it.

Or maybe I know it too damn well. But from the jazz of my mate Blaine and the “young jazz” of maRK, it is mind-bogglingly boring and like one of those office Hong Kong Spring Dinners.

I want to leave for Joyce Is Not Here, but forget that Joyce Is Not Here as of last Saturday, another venue  closed thanks to Hong Kong’s bizarre – and bent?- licensing laws.

All the image and image makers are here tonight with their beards and tats and cool Edison Chen clothes.

Is this Edison bloke good at anything or mediocre at all and famous for nothing? Even his sexual skills have been rumored to be short on delivery. Is he the Paris Hilton of Hong Kong?

Chen aside, what’s missing is the music.

The music is still what I call ponderous Mark Lui-written ballads based around Desperado- Lui being   a local musical fat cat but an unoriginal twit who has written the same fucking song for decades for the usual suspects- Andy Lau, Alan Tam, Aaron Kwok- all soundalikes in Liberace costumes and far more keen to make movies where they can make more millions.

Hell, every note, every chorus, every key change leading to the last chorus has not changed in three decades. Alan Tam recorded this predictable crap when he was a spring chicken. And in 2013, it still plods along. But why?

Have music fans here been brainwashed by the likes of TVB, ATV, even NOWTV whose music product is led by corrupt and lame TVB executives?

Or is it the fault of the old fart lo bans of the music industry who feathered their nests through corrupt means in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong and gave nothing in return other than receiving more back-handers?

Is the Hong Kong LOCAL indie scene   made up of great YOUNG designers, animators, film makers and very few good bands having nowhere to turn and hitting brick walls wherever they turn?

Yes, they are. What? Depend on CreateHK? What another local government con that is.

Who will go to bat for them? Me? And what army behind me?

Who or what is creating this impasse, this void and this perception of Hong Kong being made up of creative eunuchs and lemmings?

We know who.

Does Hong Kong need another no-can-do knob like former music exec Paco Wong- now into films? Well, he had numerous chances to take music further and what’s there to show other than a guy who looks like Marty Feldman?

And so I leave Peel Fresco and plod to Wanchai and hear wannabe Filipino “bluesmen” performing note-perfect Dire Straits covers to an audience too drunk too care and too dumb to know, It’s just music and who cares about originality?

(Source: Troll)

Well, I care about originality and so do guys who have been here and seen flim flam men at work- but the sad problem is that they have given up and joined the Barney Rubble and have become part of the problem.

They have let the tail wag the dog and let the side down.

That’s even more sad than the ponderous Canto-Pop ballads and for all your talk, gentlemen, it’s just that. And a somewhat perfected con.
