The new way of looking at horse racing

TIPS FOR SUNDAY AT SHATIN‏

Though our man from New York got on the board when his longshot Emperor Claudius saluted at over 20 to 1 and our Captain Jack Sparrow unearthed a treasure in 30 to 1 pop Perfect Cheers, below, it was a rather subdued Happy Wednesday after the events that marred race two. It took around race six for there to be some semblance of normality.

(Source: Apple Daily)

Some of us had jockey friends who were injured, others had horses come to a tragic end and everyone on course with a heartbeat were shaken, stirred and numb.

One can only feel for everyone involved with Thomas Chippendale who gave everything to win the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday and then collapsing after the winning post.

Back at Happy Valley, music might have rocked the win- but it was subdued rocking. As for Mo Mo from China singing Simply The Best? No Mo Mo, please.

And in an ironic twist of fate, the second horse to fall- Good Hong Kong – unhurt- and ridden by Dougie Whyte- is owned by John Yuen, the fanatical fung shui-controlled horse owner of Good Ba Ba infamy. Guess he’ll be changing his fung shui master just like he changes trainers, jockeys and his underwear.

ENTOURAGE

Sarika was going to put on the Six Up for her Entourage comprising Justin and Natalie before race 3, but after seeing all the different jockey changes after the aftermath of race 2, it became too confusing for her.

The whole entourage waited for races seven and eight and backed both winners.

TONIGHT SELECTIONS FROM THE BIG APPLE

BEST BET

Race 8, No. 3 Windicator Star

Massive effort to flash home for fourth Wednesday night despite bombing the start. Is proven at the course/distance and Fownes is exceptional at backing up horses.

SECOND BEST

Race 10, No. 9 Holmes Legend

Made up a ton of ground in a slowly run race to finish a gallant second to Why Not. Strikes a race with little depth and can go one better.

LONGSHOT

Race 9, No. 8 Sparkling B

Recent efforts have been okay and provided a clean trip, is an outside chance.

CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW

Well, he did tell us that the “perfect ending” to the night would be Perfect Cheers and we cheered that good thing home at 30 to 1 in the last at Happy Valley on Wednesday.

(Source: Fan Pop)

As for today at Shatin, the good captain will be watching LUCKY EIGHTY EIGHT (RACE 8,6) purely because the horse was supposedly bought for quite a hefty bounty and turns his beady eyes on the following horses for value: PERI PERI SAFFRON (RACE 5,9) and HONG KONG DANCER (RACE 11, 13) and warns that the last race could upset many and to turn wide at the corner and head left.

THE FAST TRACKER ON SUNDAY AT SHATIN

The Fast Tracker

What a week it’s been and Steve Railton from the Licensing Committee of the HKJC must have been taking Valium by the handful trying to find ways to get around the problem of the jockey shortage- pun intended.

However, getting Nathan Berry, identical twin of Tommy Berry, out here in an emergency call-up is a great move as a stop-gap measure though I am sure there will be changes in place next season to ensure concrete contingency plans- just in case.

(Source: SMH)

There has to be a contingency plan in place and CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges is no fool. Let’s not forget he was Director of Racing at the HKJC and is the complete racing professional who will look at what happened- and what could have happened- from a very tough business perspective and ensure the Club is never caught “on the hop” or short-changed again.

(Source: Apple Daily)

No one is trying to make light of what happened on Wednesday night and apart from the jockeys involved in that horrific fall- and their incredible resilience in one of the most dangerous sports in the world- let’s never forget the equine casualties and the equine heroes who ensured that they kept away from galloping over their riders.

It was camaraderie between man and beast for all to see and proof that horses are wonderful and extraordinary animals.

(Source: Apple Daily)

Today, we are extremely fortunate to see Tye Angland and Dougie Whyte, both involved in Wednesday’s fall, back riding again. They make them tough in those riding schools and huge credit to Angland for going straight to Whyte, keeping him from harm’s way and unfastening the chin strap on his helmet to help him breathe easier.

This was camaraderie at its finest and, to me, Tye Angland is a bloody hero and champion bloke.

(Source: Zimbio)

With Zac Purton still sidelined after his laser surgery to remove kidney stones, today’s racing has a rather strange undertone to it. I wouldn’t say, eerie, but I also wouldn’t say that it’s altogether comfortable either and with showers expected, what could be extremely hard to end up with a profit.

Trainers have had to find replacement jockeys after approval from owners and it remains to be seen if these changes result in some unusual results.

The one combination that has not been affected is that of trainer John Size and Douglas Whyte. The trainer has entered a number of his young guns and it’s obvious that Whyte would not want to lose any of the rides- not even for one meeting. This has what has made the champion jockey the ultra-competitive and focused sportsman that he is.

(Source: Apple Daily)

Yes, they build them tough in South Africa and I just hope that the Durban Demon is not rushing it and his great mental agility is intact. Then again, I’m no jockey. Break a finger and I’m out of commission for months like some girlie man.

(Source: Batr)

As for John Size, today seems to be his strongest day to overtake or, at least, close in on Dennis Yip who currently leads the Trainers Premiership.

(Source: Sharp Daily)

Size has entered eight runners headed by the very good Dr Good Habit which is going for its third successive win and one doubts being drawn out in barrier 13 will stop the good doctor from making another house call to the winning post. The ONLY horse that might stop this winning run is Holmes Legend. Watch out for this one.

(Source: Apple Daily)

The Size Matters Army also includes Dehere’s The Love and Sichuan Exec, both of which are not for me, Master Sommelier, the disappointing Khaya, and winning chances with Glorious Sunday and Fighter Class, all to be ridden by Whyte.

(Source: Other Land Toys)

Dennis Yip replies and tries to repel this assault with nine runners including K-moochi- to be ridden by Terry CW Wong- Lucky Army, Joy Together and Grimmy, all to be ridden by apprentice Alvin Ng leading his charge.

(Source: Sina)

The Chipmunk versus The Durban Demon? Yippie-Kai-Yey, muthaf*cker!

(Source: Tee T Shirts)

With racing taking place on the A Course, there shouldn’t be a noticeable track bias- speaking of which, what a horrible track bias at Royal Ascot- and barriers might come into play only if any of the apprentices are drawn out in the boonies and go wobbly with their navigational skills.

As for The Jockeys Challenge, Dougie Whyte will be very short to take it out and he wouldn’t have gone through all the cat scans etc to get the green light to ride and then just come to Shatin and watch the grass grow.
