THE HKJC, HORSE RACING AND BOTTLEMANIA
With creativity in short supply in Hong Kong except for the Delay No More work of g.o.d.- too cutting edge for many- we’re just happy there are artists like Eileen Chan who, amongst other things, does some fantastic work through her company Bottlemania using recycled wine bottles.

Hey, to each their own. Andy Warhol worked with Polaroids and can of Campbell’s Soup whereas our old mate Vinnie Van Gogh had a thing for Sunflowers and cutting his ear off.
With horse racing in mind, Eileen’s working on a limited collection of wine bottles featuring the silks of well-known owners- far more “Group 1” in quality than wearing t-shirts adorned with silks which might get one arrested by the Fashion Police for masquerading a jockey.
With this being the 130th Anniversary of the HKJC, we think a “Time In A Bottle” series by our favorite Bottlemania Lady showcasing some of the many ways in which the Club has helped enrich the lives of many in Hong Kong, will be exceptionally well received.
It can be part of a holistic and- key- ongoing campaign in getting to the heart of the matter and showing the human face of a Club that is more than a one-dimensional institution focussed only on the Mark Six, horse racing and football.

THE FAST TRACKER GOES CROSS BETTING- AND MAYBE CROSS-DRESSING- AT MILLIONS AT HAPPY VALLEY.
Yes, for the next three Wednesdays and while the Happy Valley track is undergoing some major drainage surgery, a more scaled down- but still fun- Happy Wednesday nights will continue at the impressive Millions venue.
It should certainly give those who prefer to cross-bet at Happy Valley instead of making the long trek out to Shatin on a Wednesday night, a far more entertaining night out at the races- though not really AT the races- whereas for regular Happy Wednesday fans, the ‘live’ music is there- and musical sets as opposed to a song every 25 minutes- a buffet, a huge balcony area and a comfortable atmosphere to inter-act, be with friends, make new friends, pick your horses and see if you win.
Sure beats that Long March to Shatin- and sad Long March back if it’s not been a winning night.
Tonight, with a Triple Trio and Six Up jackpot to win, I’d be concentrating on these and following the Caspar Fownes runners- though they might not offer any value, something I get stuck into below.
R1 SLEDGE HAMMER/SOLAR BOY/TAKE THE RAP
R2 VERDANE/GOLDLAND DANCER/CHATER D’CAT
Think it’s between Moreira and Bowman while those Chater horses only win when their connections don’t have a dime on them.
R3 WILD BOY/MR VANILLA/CHEERS VICTORIES/RAY OF GOLD
Whenever Douglas Whyte gets down to a low weight to ride a horse, alarm bells go off as it’s ALWAYS a sign that he’s made the effort as he believes he can win on it. And despite being drawn barrier 14 in this 1200m race, Whyte riding Ray Of Gold at 119 pounds can’t be ignored and must go into this first leg of the Six Up where there’s a jackpot.
R4 APOLLO CAVALIER/STARTLING POWER/MEDIC KINGDOM/BOULD MOVER
Like Dougie Whyte before him, like Joao Moreira when Magic was in the air, every Zac Purton ride will be very short and under the odds.
With great power, comes great responsibility, and in racing, with great success comes overnight odds in a very small pool which can easily be manipulated so that the lemmings follow these odds and where false favorites are created.
Again, here, Startling Power with The Zac Attack up will start favorite in this first leg of the Triple Trio and CAN win. It’s just that a single Win bet on it offers no value- and is risky- when Apollo Cavalier, below, won so easily on this surface for the out-injured Howard Cheng and is a ride snapped up by Douglas Whyte whereas Medic Kingdom is another with a good winning chance while Bould Mover can add value into quinellas and tierces.
R5 I’M IN CHARGE/HELLO KIMBERLEY/ORIENTAL PROSPER/RHUMBA KING
I’m In Charge has been working very well and though flying under the radar this season, Brett Prebble is no fool and has been on the button when it comes to delivering when it matters whether it’s on Lucky Nine or Distinct Commander or any Class 5 galloper.
Money is money and, like whether spending squillions purchasing what MIGHT be champions, or taking a punt and ending up with a California Chrome or Takeover Target, the end game is all about winning, and I reckon the old firm of Fownes and Prebble have got this one set and ready for a BIG go.
R6 CLEVER BEAVER/GREAT RUN/NEW DEERFIELD/SCIMITAR
Yes, I’ve left out Both Sure and Master Sommelier as both horses will probably be way under the odds whereas the latter galloper races like a bad Red and comes up flat when it comes to winning a race.
They can both win without my money as I have been impressed with the trackwork of Clever Beaver, I’ve always enjoyed good beaver and Matty Chadwick will be hungry to get amongst the winners following his return to the saddle after his nasty looking fall a few weeks ago.
R7 GUN PIT/SUPREME ESSENCE/DANEWIN EXPRESS
Gun Pit was a certainty beaten at its last start at Happy Valley when Zac Purton made one of the very few errors of judgement in an incredible season of consistently good riding: He was too confident- and seeing this, Douglas Whyte pounced on the opportunity and beat him on the line aboard the Tony Cruz-trained Beauty King.
Gun Pit is, no doubt fit, as Caspar Fownes has taken a voluntary promotion and entered the horse in this dirt race with Tommy Berry riding it at only 116 pounds. The wide barrier draw doesn’t bother me as the one mile journey will give Berry time to settle and position his ride.
My only query is switching Gun Pit from the turf to the dirt- but, hey, Caspar is no soggy samosa and driven to win the Trainers Premiership, the galloper hasn’t been entered to canter around looking at the scenery.
I give this a very good chance to make up for its last start defeat and the connections have been getting ready for the winning photograph since last week.
R8 TODOS CON SUERTO/FORMULA WON/FREE JUDGEMENT/MAJESTIC ANTHEM
Sure, it’s tough to go past Free Judgement, Majestic Anthem and, especially, Formula Won which will be going for its fourth successive win, but, like Key Witness on Sunday and where Berlinski just HAD to win, below, it might start very short in the betting if the Fownes-Purton team have had a good night by then. and in a competitive race where quite a few runners will take off like the clappers, The Zac Attack will have to be at his lethal best.
Why I have Todos Con Suerto on top is that I enjoyed Zorro movies, I enjoy pronouncing the name like Antonio Banderas, and find it interesting that trainer Peter Ho is racing the horse up a class and which doesn’t look like one of those transparent attempts to get the horse down in the weights for the “REAL race” it’s been targeted for and when Ben So will be in the saddle instead of Alex Lai who rides it tonight.
