The new way of looking at horse racing

TIPS, TYE, AND HK’S DING DONG WANG DOODLES

HARD TO TYE ME KANGAROO DOWN, SPORT.

tips 1

Like the Scarlet Pimpernel, they seek him here, they seek him there, they seek that dastardly Tye Angland everywhere. But, apparently, to no avail.

tips 2

Yes, remember Tye Angland who rode in Hong Kong until a few weeks ago and then left abruptly to look after some personal issues?

tips 3

Well, that was around 3-4 meetings ago and the Tyeman is still to return for the rest of this season, his last in Hong Kong.

Of course, this has placed the HKJC in an awkward predicament: Do they write him off as a non-player for the rest of this season and bring in replacement riders like Anthony Delpech or wait- and then, wait for how long?

tips 4

But, if the Tyeman just can’t stick it in Hongkers anymore, fine, and more power to him.

But, as a jockey who raised more than a few eyebrows when given a license to ride in Hong Kong over far bigger names in Oz, it’s a pity if the relationship between the Club and the fine young rider, who has come into his own over the past two seasons becomes so strained that the door to Hong Kong slams shut forever.

tips 5

One thing we have learnt about working in any industry in Hong Kong is this: Don’t burn any bridges. Confucious say, Man who burns bridges in Hong Kong also burns ass- big time.

tips 6

Not such an ass is local rider Derek Leung who, we hear, will be spending the off-season riding for Lady GaiGai Waterhouse in Sydney and fine-tuning his fine motor skills.

tips 7

After great expectations as an apprentice, Derek has hardly set the race tracks alight with brilliance.

tips 8

In fact, he hit a rather flat spot for a long while before seemingly getting his mojo back in recent weeks and bringing his horses home from seemingly hopeless positions to get up and win.

tips 9

With Lady GaiGai’s penchant for having her horses ridden on the speed, this might help our Derek to discover another way of winning a race instead of being a one trick pony.

tips 10

This just in: Tye Angland has recreated himself. Watch and be mystified.

THE FAST TRACKER PLODS THROUGH SHATIN

With a Black Storm Warning on Thursday night and some awfully pissy weather with time far better spent indoors with the ol’ ball and chain and watching BBC Lifestyle, today’s meeting is not exactly one of life’s priorities.

tips 11

Getting my leg over is- and a tough job when the depressing weather becomes such a downer in the Performance Department.

tips 12

Looking at the mixed card of all-bother and turf races on what will definitely be on a very rainy day and a Saturday and with no one knowing how the tracks will ride, I can see tears ahead, but not as many as some of my mates who became wild and crazy guys and bet the house on Enjoy Oneself and Fat Choy Hong Kong on Wednesday, both of which didn’t even place.

tips 13

Faring far better were a group of young ladyfriends who bet $5,000 onto the two Beauty horses as they like, well, beauty, plus going BANG on the last Aussie Aussie Aussie quinella and walked off with close to HK$200,000.

tips 14

So much for following tipsters which really must be an endangered species in racing.

If one only kept score of the crowing when tipping a winner that every man and dog knew to bet on and then the Roaring Silence when their tipping skills- come on, few are legitimate- go tips up.

tips 15

I’m certainly no tipster, but if wanting to follow my thoughts, fine. If not, also fine.

Life’s too short to become a small-time racing tragic when there’s a whole other- and much bigger-world out there.

tips 16

R1 MASSIVE/FIERY RAIDER/DAILY DOUBLE/MIGHT AND VISION

An all-weather race and with a sloppy track predicted, it makes sense to those who will get out in front and try to run the others ragged.

tips 17

R2 WINNING ADVANTAGE/JUST MISTERE/YOU AND M, GLOBAL FAME

R3 SHINING CHAMPION/YAT DING WIN/INCREDIBLE FELLOW

Could John Size have presented Hughie Bowman with his first winner in Hong Kong by booking him for his first-starter Shining Champion? I think so.

tips 18

R4 NAMJONG BLOSSOMS/CONFUCIUS ELITE/FAIR WIND/FOREVER AHEAD

Interesting to see Hughie Bowman on Medic Kingdom with regular rider Karis Teetan on Confucius Elite. Dougie Whyte bothering to ride Fair Wind at 116 pounds and drawn barrier one looks ominous as does Neil Callan on the speedy Namjong Blossoms.

tips 19

R5 VARA PEARL/STAR MAJESTIC/KINGSTON JUMBO/GLACIER BLUE

If not suspended, Joao Moreira would have taken the ride on Vara Pearl which ran an eye-catching fourth at its last start and has the very much in-form- and flying under the radar- Vincent Ho aboard.

tips 20

As a VERY big outsider: Kingston Jumbo

R6 TELECOM PRINCE/GRACEFUL KINGDOM/HECO RIDER

The track conditions, some surprising riding engagement and a real nightmare of a race.

tips 21

R7 TRIUMPHANT JEWEL/PURE FORCE/MY LITTLE FRIEND

Hopefully, Triumphant Jewel comes back with the form it showed when spanking the impressive Luger.

tips 22

R8 DEHERE’S THE LOVE/RHUMBA KING/MASTER KOCHAWANG

Have always had time for Rhumba King when entered for these dirt races and reckon trainer Me Tsui has this set for to be dancing in the rain tomorrow.

tips 23

R9 FULL TALENT/TARZAN I AM/BESPOKE MASTER

The Babe- Brent Thomson- found Full Talent and sold it to the connections and this looks like a horse going places under the care of Richard Gibson.

tips 24

Tarzan And I was backed VERY confidently at its last start but found one better.

tips 25

Though drawn wide, it won’t be lacking in fitness and John Size again has his old mate from his Sydney days- Hughie Bowman- given a horse with a winning chance. Bespoke Collars is the only other runner of any interest.

tips 26

R10 TABLEAUX/KABAYAN/ TRAVEL BROTHER/SANTA FE SUN

The recently-gelded Tableaux can have a HUGE impact on this race and could easily over-turn the tables on race favorites Santa Fe Gold and Kabayan.
