Those two “Happy Valley Kings”- Caspar Fownes and Dennis Yip- are taking a backseat these days to three other trainers- Derek Cruz, Peter Ho, and Peter Ng.
Ng, who struggled most of last season and the season before that to keep his trainer’s license and rack up the needed quota of 13 winners, has come out guns blazing this season.
What one should always remember is that Peter Ng was once noted for some very shrewd purchases from Ireland- mainly stayers that went well over soft ground and was the trainer of a Hong Kong champion in that grand old grey called Quicken Away.
Tomorrow at Happy Valley, Ng has used another of his “trump cards” to enter Super Plus over the 1000 metres dash.
Every trainer receives two “trump cards” per meeting.
Using one, usually means ensuring their horse gets a run.
For Peter Ng to use on his trump cards to ensure Super Plus gets to race tomorrow, shows how much the trainer believes the horse will do well.
To be ridden by apprentice Ben So, Super Plus has drawn a good barrier 4 and will be right there at the finish.
What’s to be noted is that Ng has a remarkable strike rate and record when he has used a “trump card” to gain his horses a run.
This record looks like continuing on Wednesday.
