There was tension in the air at Happy Valley last night, especially in the Tony Cruz camp.

The former champion jockey and trainer had only two runners entered- Beauty Sparkle and Winnie’s Horse- and both were expected to win their races and wrest the lead from Dennis Yip in the trainers table.
The pressure- and the heat- was on and we swear we saw a few hairs on Cruz’s perfectly coiffured hair sticking out.

To add to the drama, Gerard Mosse, the rider for Winnie’s horse, had a nasty spill on Mr Marfach and fractured his shoulder.

Though our thoughts were with the affable Frenchman and brilliant jockey who had won race one of the night, we also wondered who would replace him on Winnie’s Horse.
The ride went to Keith ML Yeung and both he and Matthew Chadwick delivered for Cruz.

Both gave great riding displays to bring home the bacon and Tony Cruz was in the lead in the Trainers table. The pressure was off and Cruz was smiling again.

But The Fat Lady hadn’t sung as yet. In the last race, Dennis Yip hit back when Tommy Berry won on Cheers Joy, below, a new recruit to the stable having only recently been moved from the John Size yard.

Of course, Size is one of the trainers in this battle royale, but with only two race meetings left, the great trainer must “show cause” that Size matters this Sunday.

With him and Yip having some very good chances on the weekend and Douglas Whyte, Size’s main man, going all out to ride three more winners to bring up his ton for the season and riding at least one very good winning chance for Yip on Sunday, things take on more twists and turns than a Hitchcock movie plot.

As for Tony Cruz, he’ll be there battling away. The problem for him is a lack of horses in the lower grades and Yip just might have delivered a knockout punch with the win of Cheers Joy.

If Yip kicks further ahead on Sunday, well, then, the Fat Lady has sung Yip Yip Hooray and some of us along with his staff and owners will be receiving presents of his own brand of DY jeans manufactured in Japan.
