The new way of looking at horse racing

WELL DONE! PLANET BRINGS US BACK DOWN TO EARTH

Well, after the fantastic Group 1 International Buffet served up at Shatin on Sunday, we return to earth- and Happy Valley- with a thud.

And what a better place to start- and then pick one’s self from- than a class 5 event?

Why not work down the grades so we can work our way up and just tell ourselves that there are still winners to be won?

Class 5 events and which feature Hong Kong’s lowest-rated horses are strange affairs.

When nothing is really good or stands out, it makes these events tough to follow.

However, if there is a horse young enough and the trainer finds out what can improve it, one can get one or two wins with it in this grade.

In fact, this season, a number of horses have started their seasons off in Class 5 and won their races consecutively.

On Wednesday, Planet and Well Done, both Class 5 gallopers and each with a win next to their names this season, step out again.

Trained by Tony Millard, Well Done has Matthew Chadwick on its back and who will have to realize that he is not riding his first Group 1 winner- California Memory.

Drawn barrier 12 over this 1200 metres trip, this is a tough call for the horse even with Chadwick’s ability to get them out of the barriers fast.

Far better drawn is the Danny Shum-Darren Beadman combination in Planet.

Frankly, these are “just” horses.

But if having a wager, bung them in and hope for the best.

We’ll take Gracytom, a young horse that has improvement on its side.

As for Darren Beadman, we’d rather wait for him on another Danny Shum runner in Good Hong Kong which is in Race 4.

The horse belongs to Hong Kong’s most controversial owner in John Yuen who now plans to race his former Champion galloper Good Ba Ba in Macau.

To him, we say, Good Luck.

This will never ever happen.
