WHAT HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE???

THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

Okay, as we know by now, one knows what to expect in Wanchai.

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

What? Overly friendly Filipinas, fat, drunken expats looking for short-time honeys at the Boracy Bar and the sad plight of staying out late for the sake of staying out late at truly tacky cattle parade markets like Escape and Players, or someone off their face at Dusk Till Dawn, picking up strays who looked good at 6am only to discover they’re Nigerians in blue dresses with very deep voices who demand a few hundred bucks to go away.

Meanwhile, in Soho, are those who just don’t “make the cut”- simply put those desperately seeking “coolness” but knowing it’s not in their DNA whereas those who end at ANY of the venues in this area of Hong Kong- and who have seen better- forced to lower their standards on every level.

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 4

Forget the pretentiousness of all those booming clubs with their DJs pumping out the same music down Wyndham Street and where the Beautiful People go to be seen, but what about that area in Hong Kong which decades ago was the only game in town- Lan Kwai Fong?

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 5

Yes, there are days when it’s busting at the seams- but that Cool Factor is gone. It just plods along comprising Lost Boys and Mean Girls. It’s become a bad B Grade movie.

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 6

We were there recently and watched tourists walking around aimlessly as none of the joints looked remotely interesting- dinghy pool halls, bars offering ten shots for $180, the formulaic Insomnia with another Filipino covers band and, possibly, the tackiest Hard Rock Cafe.

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 7

Walk in and it smells of piss which makes even ordering a Coke being unappetizing while a very LOUD covers band plays with absolutely zero effort to even stay in tune.

The only thing Hard Rock has going for it is an area where one can sit outside and watch the freaks and geeks wander by, but this closes at 2am while trying to order a drink means fighting some typically stupid governmental licensing laws.

All in all, a night out in Hong Kong is deadly dull as Hong Kong nightlife these days are in the hands of those who are uncreative B-graders with no idea of what they’re doing, where they’re going and simply lost when it comes to understanding the wants and needs of the consumer.

HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 8

Hell, the most happening and profitable venues in “trendy” Hong Kong are the neighborhood 7-Elevens- especially in LKF which, surely, must be the target for a raid when one sees what goes on in there with underage schoolkids.
