It seems obvious, but, often, the obvious cannot been seen by those who don’t wish to from the forest for the trees nor can be seen the Nigerian pusher men openly plying their trade under the very noses of our local constabulary.
Perhaps all those yellow umbrellas have taken their toll on Hong Kong’s finest, but, like turning a blind eye to taxi drivers who pick and choose which passengers to take for a ride, also in the jungle in the bungle on, especially, Fridays, that has become Wyndham Street- and smack dab in front of patrolling police officers- one has to actually fight off Nigerian gentlemen, here in Hong Kong enjoying refugee status, who strut towards you offering everything from cocaine and ice to hash and smack. Weed/pot is a luxury they can’t afford.
From “humble beginnings” three YEARS ago where they conducted business from the steps of Cochrane Street that lead to the Kebab House, Gekko, Lebanese restaurant Marouche and all-night club Drop, that small posse of Nigerian drug dealers who made a mockery of Hong Kong’s Blue Berets by out-smarting them in a tedious game of hide and seek, has now become a well-drilled army that walks alongside you, me and the trendies of Wyndham Street with their main target being Propaganda, the most well-known gay club down nearby Pottinger Street, and every other bar around it.
All this goes on while police harass club owners about liquor licences, complaints about noise from neighbours and, seemingly, finding it extremely difficult to understand that Hong Kong today has a openly gay scene, feel the need to target various hangouts for “special attention.”
Having said this, things have moved on in leaps and bounds when it comes to acceptance from the days of the Orwellian and feared Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and its constant raids of the Gordon Huthart-owned Disco Disco in Lan Kwai Fong, once, the only hangout for the local gay community and such legends of the entertainment world as Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Danny Chan and Roman Tam, all, sadly no longer with us and who did much to remove many stigmas attached to one’s sexual preferences.
If only our police can now be just as focused as the former SIU and remove this escalating drug menace that is a pox on society and Hong Kong nightlife and is allowed to flourish as if a law unto itself with none of those very do-gooder district councillors getting their priorities straight and asking, Why.
