As in sex, some are fast and are sprinters and like to take their time and are stayers.
Racing returns to the Valley on Wednesday and apart from the ongoing Oktoberfest promotion, racing will see the first event for stayers at the city venue for the season.
To be run over 2200 metres, these stayers races have a great deal to do with tactics and how jockeys can read a race and know what their horse can do and when to push their Go button.
On Wednesday, we see stayer (R6, #9) Victory Mascot who is something of a Happy Valley staying specialist take its place in the race and with young gun Chadwick aboard.
It looks extremely hard to beat and having won over this course and distance, it will probably start a short priced favourite.
The fly in the ointment could be the Dennis Yip trained (R6, #1) Real Generous and with Yip having a very good strike rate with stayers at Happy Valley.
The one concern is that though the horse has won over 1800 metres and looks as if it can run out 2200 metres, it has never run at the city course.
Can it adapt and show that staying is its caper on either track?
Time – and Wednesday- will tell.
