Wednesday sees the running of The Happy Valley Trophy, one of the highlights of the racing calendar for the city track.
Though the race has attracted only nine runners, it’s an absorbing race with the John Moore trained Charles The Great certain to be sent out a hot favorite.
In fact, Moore, who has a unique knack of attacking trophy races, is also represented by Final Answer in the same race.
But with Brett Prebble aboard Charles- and which sounds a little weird- and Neil Callan on Final Answer, it doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out which horse is the stable elect.
Charles The Great has won over course and distance and has a very strong finishing burst and is always ridden off the pace.
Of course, if the Valley track is favoring horses on the pace, this will prove a problem for Charles and which won’t be so great for backers of the horse which has always given us the impression that it needs further and might be looking for 1400 to 1600 metres in Shatin as it matures.
As for Wednesday, the horse that might prove to be Charles’ Achilles heel could be Arrived Ahead with Ben So aboard, the jockey whose erratic ride on Benefactor kept Deep Thinker from winning the last race on Sunday.
With So about to take an enforced holiday because of this ride, he will be out to make amends and Arrived Ahead is a horse he knows very well and which he has won on with front running tactics and which no doubt will be repeated on Wednesday in what looks on paper to be a two-horse race.
