After the excitement of Champions Day on Sunday, racing tonight at Sha Tin- Happy Wednesday returns NEXT week to Happy Valley- is a more chilled out affair, especially as it’s a meeting made up of races on the all-weather track. We’ll be kicking back and kicking out the jams whatever that means.
Still, there are eight races to win including a jackpot in the Triple Trio though most interest will no doubt be around the battle for supremacy in the Jockey Premiership between the Zac Attack aka Zac Purton and the Magic Man aka Joao Moreira.
With the former riding a treble on Sunday including two Group 1 wins, the Magic Man replying but with only a double, all the momentum is with the Australian. He’s in the zone, he’s riding like a man possessed and he smells blood. He’s flying like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. He’s playing for keep.
Though leading by six winners, the Brazilian Magic Man has probably got a stiff neck from constantly looking around. And with Purton on the shortest priced favourite of the night in the last race and a number of favourites in other races, the odds are that this six win lead could be whittled down to three or four. Or maybe two.
Then again, when being cornered, Joao Moreira is known for his Houdini acts. And though his book of rides tonight look hardly inspiring, the Magic Man is known to make the ordinary extraordinary.
If both riders somehow end up shooting blanks tonight, watch out for fireworks on Sunday. It all promises to be quite a show with a grandstand finish.
As for tonight’s races, after a very successful and winning Sunday, and not being fans of all-weather meetings at the best of times and certainly not when it comes to night racing, we’ll not only tread cautiously, we’ll be well aware that nothing might go according to the script…and the odds and what even the Three Amigos of the HKJC Masterpiece Theatre Production of Racing To Win might say.
